What are head lice?

Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are parasitic insects that are found on the heads of people. Having head lice is a very common occurrence in the U.S. and they are spread by close physical contact, especially among children.

Head lice are usually found on the scalp near the neckline at the back of the neck and behind the ears.

There are three forms of head lice:

  1. Nit - Head lice eggs are called nits. They are very difficult to see and are often mistaken for dandruff. They are usually found attached to the hair shaft.
  2. Nymph - The nit hatches into a baby louse which
    is called a nymph.
  3. Adult - The adult louse is very small, is tan to
greyish-white in color, and has six legs. In people
with dark hair, the adult louse will look darker.

Signs that your youngster may be infested with head lice:

  • A tickling feeling in the hair and on the scalp
  • Itching on and around the head area
  • Unexplained irritability
  • Sores on the head caused by your child's scratching

How to rid the infested person of lice:

  1. Visit your pharmacy and get a bottle of pediculicide
(lice medicine) and follow the instructions
  2. Have the affected person change into clean clothes.
  3. Run a fine comb through the hair every few hours
to remove the lice, nymphs, and nits.

If this treatment routine fails to remove all of the lice, see a doctor.

Recognizing Alzheimer's Disease

New report released in conjunction with National Alzheimer's Awareness Month states that most family members miss the earliest signs of Alzheimer's in their loved ones.

Why? Simply because they don't know what symptoms they need to look for. This article will tell you how to recognize the classic Alzheimer's symptoms in those around you.

The early warning signs (markers) of Alzheimer's are usually very subtle, sometimes appearing months or even years before the characteristic memory loss and other clinical symptoms become apparent.

But these Alzheimer's markers are often misunderstood or unrecognized by family and friends. The signs of Alzheimer's include:

  • Depression: Over half of all Alzheimer's patients exhibit symptoms of clinical depression as early as two years before memory loss becomes apparent.

  • Loss of the sense of smell: Although they're usually unaware of it, the affected person's ability to discern common odors may decrease by a wide margin. The sense of taste usually remains intact however.

  • Loss of hearing: The common warning signs include keeping the TV volume too loud as well as avoiding use of the phone and face-to-face conversations.

  • Impairment of visual and spatial abilities: The affected person may have difficulty remembering visual details about objects and locations. They may also have problems following directions and using maps.

  • Unusual fingerprint patterns: Up to three-fourths of Alzheimer's patients have an abnormal number of ulnar loop patterns on their fingertips.

These patterns are similar to those found on people with Down's Syndrome, suggesting that some people may possibly have a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's.

Over four million older Americans currently live with Alzheimer's Disease. We observe National Alzheimer's Awareness Month each November to help friends and family become better informed about Alzheimer's.

Being able to recognize the early signs of potential Alzheimer's related problems is extremely important because the sooner a person is diagnosed and treatment is started, the better their chances for enjoying a longer, healthier, and happier life.

Is Laser Eye Surgery Right For You?

Is Laser Eye Surgery Right For You?

Laser Eye Surgery offers the promise of clear vision without the need to wear glasses, so it's no wonder that hundreds of thousands of Americans are taking the plunge. But is Laser Eye Surgery right for you? A review of the pros and cons might help you decide.

Laser Eye Surgery - The Pros:

  • It can reduce or eliminate the need to wear glasses for many people.

  • The procedure is relatively quick and painless.

  • Most people can go back to work almost immediately after the surgery.

  • Laser Eye Surgery is inexpensive when compared to buying new eyeglasses each year for the rest of your life.

Now, the Cons:

  • Laser Eye Surgery simply isn't an option for some people. The only way to find out if you're a good candidate is to visit your eye doctor.

  • Up front, it can be expensive at $500 and up per eye. This is especially true if it turns out that you still need glasses after the surgery.

  • In some cases, the surgery doesn't work as well as planned, meaning the patient may still need glasses or contacts for reading or for seeing in general. In rare cases, the patient's eyesight is even worse after the surgery than it was before.

  • Some patients require one or more follow-up surgeries before their eyesight is acceptable.

While there are risks associated with Laser Eye Surgery (as there are with any surgery), there are a few things you can do to minimize those risks and give yourself the best chance for improved eyesight:

  • Listen to your doctor's recommendations concerning whether you should opt for laser surgery. If he tells you that you're a poor candidate, it's best to forget about having the procedure done. Laser Eye Surgery is one area where "taking a chance" can really cost you in the end.

  • Get a second opinion. When it comes to having surgery done on your eyes, it's definitely worth a few extra dollars to get the opinion and perspective of another physician.

  • Choose a doctor and surgery center that has lots of experience in successful Laser Eye Surgeries.

  • Ask for recommendations and follow up with them. If a doctor and surgery center has lots of satisfied patients, your chances of having good results yourself will be better.

  • Do an Internet search for your doctor's name and the name of the surgery center. If there have been complaints lodged against them, chances are they'll show up.

Conclusion

Your eyesight is perhaps your most important sense, so it makes sense to protect it as much as possible. As with any surgery, Laser Eye Surgery carries inherent risks. But you can minimize those risks by "doing your homework" and carefully considering your eye doctor's advice and recommendations.

bad breath (halitosis)

Bad breath (halitosis)

Many people have a problem with bad breath (halitosis), but they have no idea what causes it or how to eliminate it. In general, there are three possible reasons why a person might have bad breath:

1 - Eating smelly foods

Aromatic foods such as onions, garlic, fish, peanut butter and others can leave a strong odor on your breath, but this type of bad breath is only temporary unless there are also other problems.

2 - Poor oral hygiene

Properly brushing, flossing and using mouthwash is essential for keeping bad breath at bay. Maintaining good oral hygiene is also very important for preventing the third (and most serious) cause of bad breath...

3 - A dental condition

Dental conditions such as gum disease, oral cancer, cavities, and/or bacteria on the surface of the tongue typically result in bad breath. Unfortunately, these conditions cannot be remedied without the help of a dentist.

In a nutshell, brushing (including the tongue), flossing and gargling with mouthwash after every meal coupled with regular professional cleanings will prevent the most pervasive causes of bad breath.

Chewing gum helps reduce the intensity of bad breath by keeping the mouth moist, and many people also find relief by using toothpaste, mouthwashes and other oral hygiene products that are formulated specifically to combat persistent halitosis.

AICAR - Drug may cure obesity

AICAR – Drug may cure obesity

cid:B80CEE7972EF48AA8BA6A0BCB6CBAA23@vinayppc

In a discovery that could help obese people and those afflicted with diabetes, The Salk Institute for Biological Studies has devised a new tablet that could help people reduce and burn fat. This, however, has openly been tested on mice and sedentary mice that took the tablet burned more fat and ran 44% farther and 23% longer than mice that didn’t. A second drug was also tried that gave better results and the mice could run 68% longer and 70% farther. The drugs may contain Resveratol, which is already being studied for anti-aging effects. The new drugs basically increase muscle endurance and thus increase metabolism as well. The drug, which is called the AICAR, might not only protect you against high-fat diet but also treat obesity. It might take a while before its efficacy and safety on humans is confirmed and could pave way for a new drug to help those who are obese. The researchers still insist exercise is always a better option than any tablet.

Natural Weight-Loss Food: Corn

Corn is a low-fat complex carbohydrate that deserves a regular place on any healthy table. Unfortunately, as with many other naturally low-fat foods, the American tendency is to smother corn-on-the-cob with butter.

But these high-fiber, fat-fighting kernels of goodness are better served with seasoning. Because corn is hearty and satisfying, it can curb your appetite.

Health Benefits

This popular food is high in fiber. In fact, it's notoriously hard to digest. But its insoluble fiber is tops at tackling common digestive ailments (like constipation and
hemorrhoids) by absorbing water, which swells the stool and speeds its movement.

Nutritional Values

Corn, Yellow or White
Serving Size: 1 medium (7") ear
Calories: 77
Fat: 1 g
Saturated Fat: <1 g
Cholesterol: 0 mg
Carbohydrate: 19 g
Protein: 3 g
Dietary Fiber: 3 g
Sodium: 13 mg
Vitamin C: 5 mg
Folic Acid: 41 mcg
Niacin: 2 mg
Potassium: 243 mg

Corn is a surprising source of several vitamins, including folic acid, niacin, and vitamin C. The folic acid in corn is now known to be an important factor in preventing neural-tube birth defects. It's just as important in preventing heart disease, according to studies that show folic acid can prevent a buildup of homocysteine, an amino acid, in the body. Long-term elevation of homocysteine has been linked to higher rates of heart disease; folic acid helps break it down.

Selection and Storage

End-of-summer corn is by far the best ear in town. Although you can find good-tasting corn year-round, many out-of-season ears aren't worth eating. When buying fresh corn, be sure it was delivered in cold storage -- as temperatures rise, the natural sugar in corn turns to starch, and the corn loses some sweetness.

Corn is best eaten within a day or two of picking. Corn husks should be green and have visible kernels that are plump and tightly packed on the cob. To test freshness, pop a kernel with your fingernail. The liquid that spurts out should be milky colored. If not, the corn is either immature or overripe. Once home, refrigerate corn immediately.

People with Unbelievable Medical Condition !!!

People with Unbelievable Medical Condition-

1. The Man Who Can't Get Fat

cid:1.1826457692@web52111.mail.re2.yahoo.com

Mr Perry
, 59, can eat whatever he likes - including unlimited pies, burgers and desserts - and never get fat. He cannot put on weight because of a condition called lipodystrophy that makes his body rapidly burn fat.

He used to be a chubby child, but at age 12 the fat dropped off "almost over night". He initially tried to eat more to gain weight, but it had no effect. Mr Perry, of Ilford in Essex, endured a decade of tests before the illness was diagnosed. It finally emerged that his body produces six times the normal level of insulin. Doctors have admitted that the condition would be a "slimmer's dream".

2. The Man Who Doesn't Feel Cold

cid:2.1826457693@web52111.mail.re2.yahoo.com

Dutchman
Wim Hof
, also known as the Iceman, is the man that swam under ice, and stood in bins filled with ice. He climbed the Mt. Blanc in shorts in the icy cold, harvested world records and always stands for new challenges.

Scientists can't really explain it, but the 48-year-old Dutchman is able to withstand, and even thrive, in temperatures that could be fatal to the average person.

3. The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep: stayed awake 24 hours a day for years

cid:3.1826457693@web52111.mail.re2.yahoo.com

Rhett Lamb
is often cranky like any other 3-year-old toddler, but there's one thing that makes him completely different: he has a rare medical condition in which he can't sleep a wink.

Rhett is awake nearly 24 hours a day, and his condition has baffled his parents and doctors for years. They took clock shifts watching his every sleep-deprived mood to determine what ailed the young boy.

After a number of conflicting opinions, Shannon and David Lamb finally learned what was wrong with their child: Doctors diagnosed Rhett with an extremely rare condition called chiari malformation.

"The brain literally is squeezed into the spinal column. What happens is you get compression, squeezing, strangulating of the brain stem, which has all the vital functions that control sleep, speech, our cranial nerves, our circulatory system, even our breathing system," Savard said.

4. The Girl Who is Allergic to Water

Teenager Ashleigh Morris can't go swimming, soak in a hot bath or enjoy a shower after a stressful day's work - she's allergic to water. Even sweating brings the 19-year-old out in a painful rash.

Ashleigh, from Melbourne, Australia, is allergic to water of any temperature, a condition she's lived with since she was 14. She suffers from an extremely rare skin disorder called Aquagenic Urticaria - so unusual that only a handful of cases are documented worldwide.

5. The Woman Who Can't Forget

cid:4.1826457693@web52111.mail.re2.yahoo.com

That's the story of AJ, an extraordinary 40-year-old married woman who remembers everything.

McGaugh and fellow UCI researchers Larry Cahill and Elizabeth Parker have been studying the extraordinary case of a person who has "nonstop, uncontrollable and automatic" memory of her personal history and countless public events. If you randomly pick a date from the past 25 years and ask her about it, she'll usually provide elaborate, verifiable details about what happened to her that day and if there were any significant news events on topics that interested her. She usually also recalls what day of the week it was and what the weather was like.

The 40-year-old woman, who was given the code name AJ to protect her privacy, is so unusual that UCI coined a name for her condition in a recent issue of the journal Neurocase: hyperthymestic syndrome.

Natalie Cooper
, a 17-year-old teenager who has a mystery illness that makes her sick every time she eats anything. Well, almost anything. She can eat one thing that doesn't make her sick: Tic tac mint!

For reasons that doctors are unable to explain, Tic tacs are the only thing she can stomach, meaning she has to get the rest of her sustenance from a specially formulated feed through a tube.

7. The Musician Who Can't Stop Hiccupping

cid:6.1826457693@web52111.mail.re2.yahoo.com

Chris Sands, 24, from Lincoln, hiccups as often as every two seconds - and sometimes even when he is asleep. He has tried a variety of cures, including hypnosis and yoga, but nothing has worked. Mr Sands thinks his problem stems from an acid reflux condition caused by a damaged valve in his stomach. "If the acid levels are severe enough they are going to do keyhole surgery and grab part of my stomach and wrap it around the valve to tighten it," he said.

Mr Sands, who is a backing singer in the group Ebullient, said the condition has hampered his career as he has only been able to perform four times. In the
next couple of weeks --as of the day of the report--, doctors at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre will put a tube into his stomach to monitor acid levels and decide if keyhole surgery is possible.
8. The Girl That Collapses Every Time She Laughs
Kay Underwood, 20, has cataplexy, which means that almost any sort of strong emotion triggers a dramatic weakening of her muscles. Exhilaration, anger, fear, surprise, awe and even embarrassment can also cause sufferers to suddenly collapse on the spot.

Kay, of Barrow-upon-Soar, Leicestershire (UK), who was diagnosed with the condition five years ago, once collapsed more than 40 times in a single day. She said: "People find it very odd when it happens, and it isn't always easy to cope with strangers' reactions. "

Like most cataplexy sufferers, Ms Underwood is also battling narcolepsy - a condition that makes her drop off to sleep without warning. Narcolepsy affects around 30,000 people in the UK and about 70 per cent of them also have cataplexy.

9. The Woman Who is Allergic to Modern Technology

cid:7.1826457693@web52111.mail.re2.yahoo.com

For most people talking on a mobile phone, cooking dinner in the microwave or driving in a car is simply part of modern living in 21st century Britain. But completing any such tasks is impossible forDebbie Bird - because she is allergic to Cell Phones and Microwaves.

The 39-year-old is so sensitive to the electromagnetic field (emf) or 'smog' created by computers, mobile phones, microwave ovens and even some cars, that she develops a painful skin rash and her eyelids swell to three times their size if she goes near them. As a consequence, Mrs Bird, a health spa manager, has transformed her home into an EMF-free zone to try and stay healthy. 'I can no longer do things that I used to take for granted,' Mrs Bird said. "My day-to-day life has been seriously affected by EMF".

5 Reasons Why You Should Start Practicing Yoga And Meditation

5 Reasons Why You Should Start Practicing Yoga And Meditation

The practice of yoga and meditation has become increasingly popular in the past few years, but I am sure that there are many people who are still asking themselves, "What's in it for me?" So, if you have been wondering whether it would be worth your time to start practicing yoga and meditation, I would like to give you five good reasons why it would be a very worthwhile activity for you.

1. Yoga and meditation will improve your health

Yoga postures put gentle pressure on the internal organs of the body and help them to function properly. In particular the postures help your digestive system to work smoothly and thus avoid problems such as constipation, acidity and indigestion, which are common conditions that can lead to more serious problems later on. Meditation and deep relaxation can be just what you need to lower your blood pressure. Thus, yoga postures plus meditation is a great combination for maintaining and improving health.

2. Yoga and meditation will help you to overcome bad habits

What's a "bad habit?" It's something that you are doing continually, and something that you know is harming you but you can't stop it. Are you smoking now? Maybe you thought it was good when you started, but you would now like to stop. The trouble is that it is not so easy to quit smoking or a similar habit once it has become established.

This is where yoga and meditation can help you out. The yoga postures help you to become more relaxed and mentally balanced. Meditation can help you to concentrate your mind and build up your will-power. Once you become internally balanced and have a stronger will power, it will become possible for you to break any habit, even one that you have been troubled by for many years.

3. Yoga and meditation will help you to lose weight

Obesity is one of the biggest health problems of the modern era. Our lives have become more sedentary and our food sources have changed over the last 100 years and this why many adults and even children are now overweight.

Although this is a life-style problem, it is something that can be dealt with. The surest way to lose weight is to get more exercise and to control what you are eating. This is of course, easier said than done. But yoga and meditation can help you out. There are some yoga postures that are helpful in weight loss programs. Similarly, the mental strength that you can get from both yoga postures and from meditation can help you to gain a better control over your diet and this can result in healthy and permanent weight loss.

4. Yoga and meditation will bring you inner peace

You may be earning a lot of money and you may have a lot of social prestige but is physical or social wealth the goal of your life? Whatever material or social wealth you have, if you are not contented, satisfied and at peace with yourself then you will not be a happy person.

The goal of meditation is to help you find the inner core of your being. Who are you? Is it the name and address on your identity card? If you start meditating you will find that deep within you is a pool of infinite love and peace. This is the real you. If you can reach this place, then you will find peace and contentment; it is guaranteed!

5. Yoga and meditation will make you a wiser person

Every one of us has made mistakes that we regret. There is nothing we can do about the past. We can't go back in time and not make the mistakes. But what we can do is to build up our capacity to see what has permanent value and what is transitory. When we attain this state of discrimination, then we will not do actions that we will regret later on.

Meditation helps a person to go beyond the "chatter" of the mind and attain a state of wisdom that will always be of help. Wisdom does not mean stuffing your mind with "facts" but it does mean to have a mind that will choose a course of action that brings about the welfare of everyone.

I have a list with many more reasons why yoga and meditation are helpful, but I thought I would start off with these five reasons. So, if any one of these items are interesting for you, then why not see for yourself, and start practicing yoga and meditation?

The Simple Art of Washing Your Face

Did you know that you have a great deal of control over the texture, clarity, suppleness and long-term health of facial skin just based on how and how often you cleanse? Whether you're young or old, man or woman, you can do your skin a big favor by cleansing correctly.

Cleansing is arguably the most important part of your basic skincare routine. Proper cleansing gets rid of old surface skin cells, dirt and dust, grime, make-up and bacteria, and keeps skin pores free of clogs and able to breathe freely. Cleansing also aids circulation and prepares the skin to receive topically applied nutrients and lipids.'

Here are some tips for proper facial cleansing from the 5,000-year-old healing tradition of Ayurveda:

1.      Cleanse twice a day, no more. Unless you have exposed your skin to excessive dust, grime or pollution, twice-a-day cleansing is more than adequate for any skin type. Cleansing too often strips your skin of precious natural oils. Not cleansing regularly, particularly before you retire for the night, may lead to build-up and eruptions.

2.      Choose a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type. Do not use soap on facial skin: it can be too harsh and drying and damage skin over time. A too-rich cleanser can clog pores, while a too-dry cleanser can irritate the skin. A cleanser for dry skin should contain nourishing herbs and oils. One for oily skin should include herbs that balance oil production and support clarity. Sensitive skin benefits from an ultra-gentle, fragrance-free, non-irritating cleanser.

Traditional ayurvedic cleansers are made fresh with natural ingredients such as ground oats, lentils or chickpeas, complexion enhancing or clarifying herbs such as turmeric, Amalaki, Neem and sandalwood, emollients such as milk, cream yogurt or honey, and floral or citrus waters for pure healing fragrance. You can make your own by mixing the dry ingredients to last a week or two and blending the mix with milk or cream right before use. Otherwise, look for a natural cleanser that's gentle and fortified with skin-friendly herbs.

3.      Always cleanse with tepid water. Hot water dries and damages skin over time, and cold water won't dissolve and take away embedded dirt and grime as well as lukewarm water.

4.      If you use sponges or washcloths, make sure they are clean and soft. They are not necessary for effective cleansing: your fingertips can do just as good a job.

5.      Wash your hands thoroughly before you cleanse your face, or you will be working dirt into facial skin. Use a headband to secure hair away from the face.

6.      Start by splashing tepid water on your face and neck.

7.      Apply the cleanser with your fingertips or a soft sponge, using gentle circular massaging strokes and moving upward on the face and neck. Do not scrub too much…gentle massaging strokes are enough to help improve circulation as well as loosen grime and old surface skin cells. Too much scrubbing will stretch skin and irritate it, especially the delicate skin around the eyes.

8.      Rinse with lots of tepid water. Don't forget to rinse off cleanser from the neck and hairline. Cleanser residue can clog pores and attract dirt.

9.      Gently blot off excess water with a soft towel. Do not scrub dry or drag towel along skin.

10.       Follow immediately with a water-based toner and a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type to seal in surface moisture and offer nourishment when skin is receptive.

Red grape lessens blood pressure

Red grape lessens blood pressure

The humble red grape lessens blood pressure, cholesterol levels and even the risk of heart disease, Madrid University scientists have found.

Red grape lessens blood pressure

The researchers believe that the antioxidants and fibre found in a combination of grape skin and seeds could be superfoods in the battle against heart attacks.

The latest discovery was given as a dietary supplement to volunteers, who saw their blood pressure reduced by up to five per cent and cholesterol by up to 14 per cent.

During the trials, the compound also improved volunteers’ Lipid Profiles – a range of blood tests to diagnose the risk of heart disease.

Many superfoods for the heart, such as the plant extract psyllium or healthy oats, are good for either fibre or antioxidants rather than both.

But the tests at Madrid University on grape antioxidant dietary fibre revealed that it was high in both potentially life-saving ingredients.

Researchers say the grape extract would boost the average Briton’s intake of dietary fibre to recommended daily levels of 30g a day.

And combining the supplement with a Mediterranean-style diet which includes oily fish, olive oil and tomatoes would bring even greater health benefits.

Scientists found that mixing the two elements together made the supplement 50 per cent more effective in reducing the risks of heart attacks.

“The effects appear to be higher than the ones caused by other dietary fibres, such as oat, fibre or psyllium, probably due to the combined effect of dietary fibre and antioxidants,” The Daily Express quoted Jara Perez Jimenez, the study’s lead researcher, as saying.

Sugaring Hair Removal

Sugaring Hair Removal

Sugaring Hair Removal

Sugaring hair removal is one of the best methods for hair removal because of how affordable it is, how efficient it is and how inexpensive it can be as well. If you are looking for a way to remove hair from your body, you will want to consider this method.

It uses products that you probably already have within your home. There are plenty of reasons to give it a try and with its lasting results, it may work just fine for your needs.

The sugaring hair removal is quite simple. You will apply it and use it just like you would a wax solution. The liquid is warmed, but not hot. It is then applied to the location where you want the hair to be removed. Usually, you will work in small locations at a time. Once the sugar product is applied, you will apply a clean cloth strip to the area (sometimes waxing papers can be used as well.) With a bit of pressure on the area, the fabric or paper will latch on to the hair and skin. Once this happens, a swift pull and the hair is removed. It will stick to the fabric and come right out.

The bit of pain that is associated with sugar hair removal is generally just a second's worth. It will be just from the sensation of the hairs being pulled, and usually will leave a bit of redness on the area and that is about it. In a few minutes, the skin is back to normal and there are no lasting effects.

To make a sugaring hair removal, you can do this. Mix together one cup of sugar with ¼ of a cup of honey and the juice from a half of a lemon. Place the mixture in the microwave for about a minute to two minutes. You want to have a good, mixed consistency here. Stir it as needed. Then, you should put the mixture down and allow it to cool for several minutes. While you want it to be warm, you do not want it to burn you.

When applying this sugaring hair removal, make sure to apply it and the fabric in the direction that the hair is growing. This makes for a more efficient removal. You should also insure that the area is clean and that you wash off any remaining sugar from the area as necessary.

Sugaring hair removal techniques have been used for quite a long time. It is an effective and affordable method of hair removal.

FOOD MYTH

banana.jpg

Food myths are created from outdated science, old wives' tales, and a bit of wishful thinking. They stick around because they are so familiar. But every now and then, you need to take another look at information you believe is true and change with the times. How many of these common myths are still part of your nutrition playbook?

Certain foods can burn fat.

WRONG!

According to the "negative calorie effect," the act of chewing and digesting certain foods burns up more calories than the food itself contains. Cucumbers, celery, and grapefruit top the list of foods rumored to have "negative calorie" value. However, while it may seem as if you expend a lot of energy when you chew, in reality, chewing eats up only about 11 measly calories per hour. Low-calorie, high-nutrient foods certainly will help you lose weight—not because they create negative calories, but because you're munching on them instead of crackers, chips, and cookies.

It's better to eat six mini meals than three squares.

INCORRECT!

As long as your food choices for the entire day are healthy and not too high in calories, either eating style can work. I find that many people prefer to eat more volume less frequently because of hectic schedules or heartier appetites. If that sounds like you, just be sure to keep your daily calories in check, and try not to go longer than four to five hours without eating. Doing so may make your blood sugar drop, causing low energy, headaches, and overeating in response to feeling blah. Have small snacks on hand—such as fruit, nonfat yogurt, or a bag of baby carrots—in case you're running late for lunch or dinner.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are more nutritious than frozen ones.

FALSE!

You may actually get more nutrients from some frozen fruits and vegetables. The same holds true for some canned vegetables. That's because the "fresh" produce you just bought at the grocery store may be a lot older than you think. After being harvested, produce can spend days being sorted, packaged, and then shipped, often cross-country. During that time, fluctuations in light and temperature rob fruits and vegetables of important nutrients such as vitamin C and folate.

The negative side of processing comes down to three factors: taste, texture, and additives. Frozen foods rarely taste as good as fresh, and processing can change the consistency of many items. Food manufacturers often add salt, sugar, and fat to otherwise healthy products. If you become a label sleuth, you can bypass foods that contain these additives. One final note: Items frozen in bags should move about freely, because clumping indicates that the product has been thawed and then refrozen.

Decaf coffee has no caffeine.

NOT TRUE!

My caffeine investigation found that decaf varieties contain between 8 and 32 milligrams of high-octane zip, depending on the cup size. Although this is significantly less than regular Joe (a typical 8-ounce cup provides 100-150 milligrams of caffeine), even a small amount may matter to caffeine-sensitive people. My advice: If you struggle with insomnia, stick with caffeine-free herbal tea  starting late afternoon.

Margarine is better than butter.

NOT!

Butter contains saturated fat that, when eaten in excess, can raise "bad" (LDL) cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease. For that reason, some people use margarine as a substitute. The problem with margarine—specifically stick margarine—is that it contains trans fats, which increase LDL cholesterol and lower the "healthy" (HDL) cholesterol. Double whammy!

Your best bet is a soft-tub vegetable spread that says "trans-fat free"— it will be low in saturated fat as well. If you're watching your calories, opt for soft-tub brands in "reduced fat" or "light" versions.

Bananas are fattening.

WRONG!

One medium banana has only about 105 calories—you'd have to eat at least six to equal one slice of New York-style pizza! Bananas are a good source of fiber, magnesium, and potassium, all of which can help manage blood pressure. They're also a good source of vitamin B6, which helps boost your immune system. What's more, they're portion-controlled, portable, and don't require refrigeration. Enjoy them sliced into cereal, mixed with nonfat yogurt or cottage cheese, or frozen for a yummy dessert. (On the other hand, I can't recommend packaged "banana chips," which have added fat and sugar and are loaded with calories.)

Cravings are your body's way of telling you it needs something.

NOT TRUE!

It's a convenient excuse, but a craving is not a signal that your body "needs" a specific nutrient. Scientists have gone to great lengths to test this assumption. Imagine that you have a chocolate craving (as far-fetched as I know that must be!). You are given the choice of a nutrient-rich (but not flavorful) cocktail that mimics the chemicals found in chocolate, or a candy bar that looks, smells, and tastes like chocolate but contains no authentic chocolate compounds. Which do you think would satisfy your craving most—the chocolate nutrients or the chocolate taste? In actual psychological studies, taste won, hands down.

Cravings are driven by emotions and psychology. We crave foods we enjoy and associate with pleasurable times. For example, you may crave hamburgers because you downright love the taste, or because you have strong and happy memories of eating them at family barbecues—not because you're deficient in protein or iron. Of course, hormonal changes also can be responsible for cravings. Ice cream and pickles, anyone?

Cooking veggies destroys their vitamin content.

North Carolina VegetablesNO WAY!

Cooking actually boosts your body's ability to absorb the nutrients in some vegetables. For example, the cancer-fighting phytonutrient lycopene is stronger in cooked tomato sauce than in raw tomatoes. That said, many nutrients will be lost with the wrong cooking technique. The most important rule: Do not overboil veggies! Nutrients will slip out of the vegetables and into the boiling water, so all that goodness will be lost. To retain the most nutrition, steam, roast, or microwave with as little water as possible, and keep cooking time to a minimum.

All About YOU: Stand Up Straight

One of the easiest ways to strengthen your abdominal muscles -- and support your back -- is through good posture.

You may feel like you're already standing straight, but in reality, most of us stand like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Practice good posture by bringing your head and neck back. The key element is breathing in to tighten your gut. That's the component that lifts your chest and will give you Marine-like posture.

Sometimes the smallest changes in your life can lead to the biggest results. Sucking in your gut while you do crunches, or even when you take the elevator, is a good example. It helps your body not only look younger -- by skimming a couple of inches off your middle and adding them to your lungs/chest -- but it also helps your body get stronger, because you're engaging your abdominal muscles.

Here are the five steps to perfect posture:
 1. Pull your shoulder blades back slightly toward each other and down away from your ears.
 2. Lift your chest up and out.
 3. Pull your head back just enough to keep it in line with your spine.
 4. Position your pelvis or hips to create or maintain a natural arch in your lower back.
 5. Pull your belly button in toward your spine without changing or tilting your hips or losing the arch in your lower back.

Prudent Plan

Healthful weight loss requires carefully monitoring bone health, too.
Younger, obese women who chronically diet may be at increased risk for low bone mass and osteoporosis, a recent study suggests. Both conditions could increase the risk of fractures later in life. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and get plenty of weight-bearing exercise to keep bone mass up while you slim down.

Low body mass increases the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis, conditions that increase bone fracture risk. However, obese women may suffer from these conditions as well. A recent study of 78 young, Caucasian women who were chronic dieters revealed that 31 percent of the women had osteopenia or osteoporosis due to restrained eating patterns. If you need to lose weight, do so by eating healthfully and make sure to get at least 1,200 milligrams of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D per day through diet or supplements. Also, include walking, cycling, lifting weights, and other weight-bearing exercise in your workout routine to help build and maintain bone mass.

Happy as a Crab

Shell out. It's good for your heart.

Need an excuse to splurge on crab legs, crab salad, or a cold crab cocktail on a hot summer night? How about avoiding heart disease and cancer? Crab meat in general, and crab legs in particular, are loaded with zinc, a powerful antioxidant that's just been found to help ward off both health threats.

Getting your daily dose of zinc -- up to 12 milligrams (mg) per day -- can help protect you from heart disease and cancer. In a recent study, these killers were linked not only to a lack of zinc but also to an excess of copper and a deficiency in magnesium. And being low on zinc made any problems with the other two minerals much worse. Researchers are still trying to determine whether the minerals were the direct cause of the outcome, but while they sort out the science, aim for 12 mg of zinc daily from food. Can't hurt, could help, and -- if you've got a yen for crab -- it tastes terrific.

Of course, crab's not the only good source of zinc. Oysters can't be beat, and clams and lobster are high on the list, too. On a more wallet-friendly level, you'll find beneficial amounts of zinc in nuts, peanut butter, beans, poultry, red meat, whole grains, fortified breakfast cereals, and yogurt. And a multivitamin with minerals will fill in any gaps.
Protecting your immune system can make your Age as much as 6 years younger.

Tipsy Tip

Watch out. Cocktails may sneak up on you this holiday season if you use a diet mixer.

How quickly alcohol goes to your head depends on how fast it leaves your stomach. And the artificial sweetener in diet mixers or diet versions of popular ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages causes the alcohol to pass through the stomach and into the bloodstream more quickly than nondiet mixers and beverages. Finally -- a reason to be naughty instead of stick-to-your-diet nice!

When Australian researchers compared their version of a diet screwdriver -- an artificially sweetened, orange-flavored vodka drink -- with a sugar-sweetened one, they weren't surprised that alcohol in the diet drink went to the study subjects' heads fastest. But they were struck by the impact: Blood levels after the diet beverage were so high that the person wouldn't be legally able to drive. Those who had the same amount of a sugary drink had a blood alcohol level within a legal range.

Of course, you should never drive after any drinking. And if you'd like to keep your wits about you at the office holiday party, indulge in the nondiet drinks and skip the gingerbread and sugar cookies.
Benefit: Actively patrolling your health can make your Age as much as 12 years younger.

EPILEPSY

Epilepsy, chronic brain disorder characterized by repeated convulsions or seizures. The seizures can occur as a result of underlying brain damage, a structural brain lesion, as part of a systemic medical illness, or may be idiopathic (no organic cause). Epileptic seizures differ with the type of condition and may consist of loss of consciousness, convulsive jerking of parts of the body, emotional explosions, or periods of mental confusion. Studies show that although epilepsy is not inherited, predisposition to the disorder is a hereditary trait responsible for some of the idiopathic cases.

In individuals suffering from epilepsy, the brain waves, which are manifestations of electrical activity in the cerebral cortex, have a characteristically abnormal rhythm produced by excessive and synchronous nerve-cell discharges. Furthermore, the wave patterns differ markedly according to type. Recordings of the brain waves are therefore important in the diagnosis and study of the disease, and are obtained by means of a device called the electroencephalograph.

No specific cure for epilepsy exists, but seizures can be prevented or reduced in frequency in nearly 90 per cent of the patients by the administration of drugs. The anticonvulsant drugs employed include diphenylhydantoin (phenytoin), phenobarbital, carbamazepine, ethosuximide, and valproic acid.

Because epileptic seizures vary in intensity and in symptoms, epilepsy is divided into the following major types: focal seizures (including psychomotor seizures) and generalized seizures (including grand-mal and petit-mal seizures).

The onset of an attack of grand-mal epilepsy is often signalled by an involuntary scream, caused by contraction of the respiratory muscles. As loss of consciousness sets in, the entire body is gripped by a spastic muscular contraction. The face becomes livid, the breathing is arrested, and the back arched. Subsequently, alternate contractions and relaxations of the muscles throw the body into such violent agitation that the patient is subject to serious injury. A folded handkerchief in the mouth may help prevent tongue and cheeks from being bitten during a seizure. After the convulsion subsides, the patient is exhausted and may sleep heavily. Fatigue and depression are often experienced upon awakening, and occasionally the patient has no memory of the seizure. Attacks occur at varying intervals, in some cases as seldom as once a year and in others as frequently as several times a day. Seizures may occur successively with no intervening period of consciousness; this condition, known as status epilepticus, affects approximately 8 per cent of those subject to grand-mal attacks and may be fatal unless treated promptly with diazepam or other drugs.

In petit-mal epilepsy the seizures are characterized by a sudden, momentary loss or impairment of consciousness. Overt symptoms are often as slight as an upward staring of the eyes, a staggering gait, or a twitching of the facial muscles. The patient often resumes activity without realizing that the seizure has occurred.

In psychomotor epilepsy the main symptom is amnesia. Duration of the seizures varies from a few minutes to several hours. Activity of the patient does not cease during the seizure, although behaviour is totally unrelated to environment. Also called temporal-lobe epilepsy, this form of seizure can be preceded by an aura (abdominal discomfort, dizziness, or strange odours and sensations). Some severe forms of temporal-lobe epilepsy are successfully treated by surgical removal of the damaged part of the brain.

Your Nose

A big batch of cookies coming out of the oven. Your gym bag full of dirty clothes. How do you smell these smells and thousands more? It's your nose, of course.

Your nose lets you smell and it's a big part of why you are able to taste things. The nose is also the main gate to the respiratory system, your body's system for breathing. Let's be nosy and find out some more about the nose.

Nose Parts
The nose has two holes called nostrils. The nostrils and the nasal passages are separated by a wall called the septum (say: sep-tum). Deep inside your nose, close to your skull, your septum is made of very thin pieces of bone.

Closer to the tip of your nose, the septum is made of cartilage (say: kar-tel-ij), which is flexible material that's firmer than skin or muscle. It's not as hard as bone, and if you push on the tip of your nose, you can feel how wiggly it is.

Behind your nose, in the middle of your face, is a space called the nasal cavity. It connects with the back of the throat. The nasal cavity is separated from the inside of your mouth by the palate (roof of your mouth).

Getting the Air in There
When you inhale air through your nostrils, the air enters the nasal passages and travels into your nasal cavity. The air then passes down the back of your throat into the trachea (say: tray-kee-uh), or windpipe, on its way to the lungs.

Your nose is also a two-way street. When you exhale the old air from your lungs, the nose is the main way for the air to leave your body. But your nose is more than a passageway for air. The nose also warms, moistens, and filters the air before it goes to the lungs.

The inside of your nose is lined with a moist, thin layer of tissue called a mucous membrane (say: myoo-kus mem-brayne). This membrane warms up the air and moistens it. The mucous membrane makes mucus, that sticky stuff in your nose you might call snot. Mucus captures dust, germs, and other small particles that could irritate your lungs. If you look inside your nose, you will also see hairs that can trap large particles, like dirt or pollen.

If something does get trapped in there, you can probably guess what happens next. You sneeze. Sneezes can send those unwelcome particles speeding out of your nose at 100 mph!

Further back in your nose are even smaller hairs called cilia (say: sill-ee-uh) that you can see only with a microscope. The cilia move back and forth to move the mucus out of the sinuses and back of the nose. Cilia can also be found lining the air passages, where they help move mucus out of the lungs.

Sniff, Sniff, Take a Whiff
The nose allows you to make scents of what's going on in the world around you. Just as your eyes give you information by seeing and your ears help you out by hearing, the nose lets you figure out what's happening by smelling. It does this with help from many parts hidden deep inside your nasal cavity and head.

Up on the roof of the nasal cavity (the space behind your nose) is the olfactory epithelium (say: ol-fak-tuh-ree eh-puh-thee-lee-um). Olfactory is a fancy word that has to do with smelling. The olfactory epithelium contains special receptors that are sensitive to odor molecules that travel through the air.

These receptors are very small — there are at least 10 million of them in your nose! There are hundreds of different odor receptors, each with the ability to sense certain odor molecules. Research has shown that an odor can stimulate several different kinds of receptors. The brain interprets the combination of receptors to recognize any one of about 10,000 different smells.

When the smell receptors are stimulated, signals travel along the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb is underneath the front of your brain just above the nasal cavity. Signals are sent from the olfactory bulb to other parts of the brain to be interpreted as a smell you may recognize, like apple pie fresh from the oven. Yum!

Identifying smells is your brain's way of telling you about your environment. Have you ever smelled your toast burning? In an instant, your brain interpreted the smell and a problem and you knew to check on your toast.

You learned to associate a certain smell with burning and now your brain remembers that smell so you recognize it. Your sense of smell also can help you keep safe. For example, it can warn you not to eat something that smells rotten or help you detect smoke before you see a fire.

Tastes Great!
Most people just think of the tongue when they think about taste. But you couldn't taste anything without some help from the nose! The ability to smell and taste go together because odors from foods allow us to taste more fully.

Take a bite of food and think about how it tastes. Then pinch your nose and take another bite. Notice the difference? It's just another reason to appreciate your knockout of a nose!

Make a Healthy Nut Even Healthier

Straight out of the can, peanuts are one amazing health food. But you may get more antioxidants if you buy them in the shell and do this: boil 'em.

In a recent study, peanuts boiled in their shells had a significantly higher concentration of disease-fighting phytochemicals -- more than their raw, roasted, or oiled counterparts.

Nutrition in a Nutshell
The hulls of peanuts are loaded with polyphenols, and the skins are packed with flavonoids. Researchers suspect that boiling peanuts in their shells releases these heart-healthy antioxidant compounds into the water, and the amped-up water is in turn absorbed by the nuts. The result? One powerfully healthy peanut.

How to Do It
This isn’t a newfangled food idea. In the South, boiled peanuts are part of the culinary heritage, though raw or not-quite-mature peanuts are traditionally used. Cover the peanuts with salted water in a large stockpot. Simmer until the peanuts inside the shell are soft -- anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

If you’ve got high blood pressure, try this low-sodium peanut treat instead.

10 different ways to lose weight and maintain it

1. Do it for yourself. The motivation to lose weight and keep it off has to come from within you. If you're relying on gimmicky diets, you may still be hoping for some magical solution outside yourself.

2. Think 10 per cent. People who focus on losing just 10 per cent of their weight may have the best chance of long-term success. And dropping those first pounds produces the biggest health gains like decreased blood pressure, lower blood cholesterol and lower blood sugar, to name a few.

3. Take it one pound at a time. Crash weight loss programs rarely work. Even if you're able to stick with the severe calorie deprivation or the extreme energy output required, such quick-fix regimens leave you totally unprepared for the moderate but permanent changes needed to sustain the loss. Experts recommend that you strive to drop no more than half to one kilo a week while working to develop eating and activity habits that you can maintain for a lifetime.

4. Weigh in weekly. Evidence from several studies indicates that people who maintain weight loss hop on the scale at least once a week.

5. Get support. Finding a buddy to cheer you along will make the weight loss effort that much easier.

6. Expect to slip. Most people believe that you've got to do it all or it isn't worth doing. But that's not true. If you can't exercise the equivalent of walking 30 miles a week, it doesn't mean you shouldn't exercise at all. Make a start. Do what you can do. Something is always better than nothing.

7. Ease in. Just because you're suddenly burning to lose weight doesn't mean you should immediately plunge into full-throttle workouts. That's prescription for agony, injury and failure. And there's no rush. After all, if you want the weight loss to last, you'll be exercising for the rest of your life.

8. Make it fun. If you don't enjoy your workouts, you probably won't stick with them. For example, you could go dancing, play badminton, or take up a hobby that keeps you moving, like biking, hiking, or gardening.

9. Break it up. You don't have to do all your exercise in one long session. You'd burn just as many calories, and get nearly the same health benefits, by squeezing several shorter bursts of activity into your day.

10. Blend it in. You can exercise practically anytime, anywhere, without any special clothes or equipment. For example, deliberately park your car in the farthest corner of the parking lot, get off the bus one stop short of your destination, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or attack your housework vigorously. Counting up your minutes or mileage at the end of the day can provide an encouraging reward.

Yoga

Are you looking for a workout program that's easy to learn, requires little or no equipment, and soothes your soul while toning your body? If strengthening your cardiovascular system, toning and stretching your muscles, and improving your mental fitness are on your to-do list, keep reading to learn more about the basics of yoga.

What Is Yoga?

Although it seems like a hot new trend, yoga actually began more than 3,000 years ago in India. The word yoga comes from Sanskrit, and it means to "yoke," or bring together the mind, body, and spirit.

Although yoga includes exercise, it is also a lifestyle for which exercise is just one component. Disciplining your mind and body as well as connecting with your spirituality are the main goals of the yoga lifestyle.

The physical component of the yoga lifestyle is called hatha yoga. Hatha yoga focuses on asanas, or poses. A person who practices yoga goes through a series of specific poses while controlling his or her breathing. Some types of yoga also involve meditation and chanting.

There are many different types of hatha yoga, including:

*Ashtanga yoga: Ashtanga yoga is a vigorous, fast-paced yoga that helps to build flexibility, strength, concentration, and stamina. When doing Ashtanga yoga, a person moves quickly through a set of predetermined poses while remaining focused on deep breathing.

*Power yoga: Similar to Ashtanga yoga, this is also a very active form of yoga that improves flexibility and stamina by completing poses. This type of yoga is popular in the United States.

*Bikram yoga: Bikram yoga is also known as "Hot Yoga." It is practiced in rooms that may be heated to more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius).

*Gentle yoga: Gentle yoga focuses on slow stretches, flexibility, and deep breathing.

*Kundalini yoga: Kundalini yoga uses poses, deep breathing and other breathing techniques, chanting, and meditation.

*Iyengar yoga: This type of yoga focuses on precise poses. and participants use benches, ropes, mats, blocks, and chairs.

Yoga has tons of benefits. It can improve flexibility, strength, balance, and stamina. In addition to the physical benefits, many people who practice yoga say that it reduces anxiety and stress and improves mental clarity.

You have lots of choices when it comes to tailoring your yoga workout. Many fitness centers and YMCAs offer yoga classes, and many yoga instructors also offer private classes that can be purchased per class or in groups of classes.

Before taking a class, take the time to observe the class that interests you and check whether the instructor is registered with the Yoga Alliance, a certification that requires at least 200 hours of training in yoga techniques and teaching.

You may also want to try a yoga video - there are many excellent videos just for beginners. Instructional websites, CD-ROMs, and books are also available to help you learn more about yoga.

Before you head to your first yoga workout, you should dress comfortably. Snug-fitting shorts or tights and a T-shirt or tank top are best. Yoga is practiced barefoot, so you don't have to worry about special shoes.

If you're doing your yoga workout on a carpeted floor, you probably don't need any equipment, but many people who practice yoga or take yoga classes like to use a sticky mat. This type of mat provides cushioning and friction while you are doing your poses and can be purchased in sporting goods stores or often at the yoga class location.

What can you expect at a yoga class or when you watch a yoga video? To begin the class, the instructor may lead you through a series of poses called vinyasa. The Sun Salutation is a type of vinyasa in which 12 poses are performed in a graceful, flowing motion.

Before You Begin
Before you begin any type of exercise program, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor, especially if you have a health problem. Also, be sure to mention any orthopedic problems or special needs you may have to your instructor before the class begins.

Fortunately, yoga can be as vigorous or as gentle as you want it to be, so just about everyone can do it. A good instructor will be able to provide modified poses for students who are just beginning, advanced, or who have special needs.

Your schedule's already packed - so how are you supposed to fit in time to work out? Here are a few tips for fitting in fitness and staying motivated:

*Break it down. If you can't do a half hour of yoga in one sitting, try doing it in chunks. How about 15 minutes after you get up and 15 minutes before bed? Or try three 10-minute workouts to break up a long study session.

*Do what works for you. Some people have more success working out in the morning before the day's activities sidetrack them; others find that a nighttime workout is the perfect way to unwind before hitting the sack. Experiment with working out at different times of the day and find the time that fits your schedule and energy level best.

*Find a workout buddy. Doing your yoga routines with a friend is a great way to remain motivated. If you have an appointment with a friend to work out, you'll be less likely to cancel. You and your buddy can compare tips on healthy eating and exercise habits, evaluate each other's poses for form, and keep each other on track.

*Consistency is key. If you want to reap the benefits that yoga provides, you'll have to do it consistently. A once-a-month yoga workout may relieve some stress, but for benefits like increased flexibility and stamina, you should aim to practice yoga three or four times a week. It generally takes about 4 to 6 weeks of regular exercise at least 3 days a week for your body to begin to release the endorphins that make exercise such an uplifting experience.

*Set some goals. The same routine every week may become monotonous, so set some goals to help you stay focused. Perhaps you'd like to incorporate power yoga into your routine so you get a better cardiovascular workout. Maybe you've always done workout tapes at home and your goal is to sign up for a yoga class with an instructor. Whatever you choose as your goal, make sure you reward yourself when you accomplish it!

Care for Lips: Dark and Cracked lips

Care for Lips:

A beautiful smile lights up a day. It makes your face more beautiful and lively. Your lips are the most important and exquisitely sensitive part of your body. And therefore you have to take special care of your lips.

Beauty Experts tells you what are the common problems and how to take care of them..............

The common lips problems are:

*Dark Lips
*Cracked lips

1) Dark Lips:

You will be surprised to know that our lips unlike most part of our body do not have any melanin pigment to protect them. Lips are covered on the outside by a thin layer of skin and on the inside by virtually transparent mucous membranes.

Therefore it is necessary to take care of our lips and to eat well-balanced food and lots of fruits.

If you have dark lips you have to do the following………

*Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

* Stop smoking.

* Avoid lipstick.

* Apply a layer of oil and leave it on for several hours. Best apply before    going to bed

* Mix coconut oil and almond oil in equal quantity. Apply a coat of this on    the lips and leave on overnight. This has to be done daily for at least    two weeks for best results.

* Massage lips: Every night with a mixture of 1/2 tsp. Glycerine and 1/2   tsp. Castor oil with 1/2 tsp. Lemon juice and leave overnight.

*Apply cream from curds with saffron on your lips.

Cracked Lips:

Lips do not produce oil like our skin, because they have no oil producing glands. The skin on our lips is actually mucous membrane, so for them to remain smooth and chap free is a bit of a challenge. The most common cause of cracked lips are allergic reaction to cosmetics, skin infections, extreme weather conditions like excess sun and wind exposure, biting of the lips or a vitamin B deficiency.

If you have cracked lips you have to do the following………

*Protect the lips from weather by applying heavy plain cream.

*Avoid licking your lips.

*To cure dry chapped lips apply peanut butter or coco butter to your   lips before going to bed.

*Grind rose petals with cream on the top of milk and apply on lips to   cure the cracked lips

*Take vitamin B, C foods in diet.

*Mix 2 drops of glycerine with 1 tsp of cream on the top of milk and   apply to lips to cure the chapped lips and keep overnight to get smooth   and shiny lips.

*Mix equal quantities of nutmeg, turmeric, and fresh butter and apply to   lips.

*Hot water fomentation, followed by a mixture of Vaseline and honey   applied on the lips at least thrice a week will prevent lips from   chapping.

*Lips should be moisturized and exfoliated. Exfoliate lips with your gentle    facial scrub using a toothbrush or just the tips of

your fingers. You can   make a paste using baking soda and water to exfoliate lips as well.    Work it for a minute and then rinse with lukewarm water.

General Care for lips:

*Apply cold cream or moisturizer or lip balm before applying lipstick.

*To get natural pink lips apply beetroot juice before bed.

*Grind rose petals and apply on lips to get smooth pink lips

*Apply menthol based lip balm and take an old brush and brush gently on lips (don t rub too hard, because lip are very sensitive) to get rid off chapped lips.

Why exercise is wise

You've probably heard countless times how exercise is "good for you." But did you know that it can actually help you feel good, too? Getting the right amount of exercise can rev up your energy levels and even help improve your mood.

Rewards and Benefits
Experts recommend that teens get 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. Here are some of the reasons:

*Exercise benefits every part of the body, including the mind. Exercising causes the body to produce endorphins, chemicals that can help a person to feel more peaceful and happy. Exercise can help some people sleep better. It can also help some people who have mild depression and low self-esteem. Plus, exercise can give people a real sense of accomplishment and pride at having achieved a certain goal — like beating an old time in the 100-meter dash.
*Exercising can help you look better. People who exercise burn more calories and look more toned than those who don't. In fact, exercise is one of the most important parts of keeping your body at a healthy weight.
*Exercise helps people lose weight and lower the risk of some diseases. Exercising to maintain a healthy weight decreases a person's risk of developing certain diseases, including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. These diseases, which used to be found mostly in adults, are becoming more common in teens.
*Exercise can help a person age well. This may not seem important now, but your body will thank you later. Women are especially prone to a condition called osteoporosis (a weakening of the bones) as they get older. Studies have found that weight-bearing exercise, like jumping, running or brisk walking, can help girls (and guys!) keep their bones strong.
There are three components to a well-balanced exercise routine: aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility training.

Aerobic Exercise
Like other muscles, the heart enjoys a good workout. You can provide it with one in the form of aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is any type of exercise that gets the heart pumping and quickens your breathing. When you give your heart this kind of workout regularly, it will get stronger and more efficient in delivering oxygen (in the form of oxygen-carrying blood cells) to all parts of your body.

If you play team sports, you're probably meeting the recommendation for 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous activity on practice days. Some team sports that give you a great aerobic workout are swimming, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, hockey, and rowing.

But if you don't play team sports, don't worry — there are plenty of ways to get aerobic exercise on your own or with friends. These include biking, running, swimming, dancing, in-line skating, tennis, cross-country skiing, hiking, and walking quickly. In fact, the types of exercise that you do on your own are easier to continue when you leave high school and go on to work or college, making it easier to stay fit later in life as well.

Strength Training
The heart isn't the only muscle to benefit from regular exercise. Most of the other muscles in your body enjoy exercise, too. When you use your muscles and they become stronger, it allows you to be active for longer periods of time without getting worn out.

Strong muscles are also a plus because they actually help protect you when you exercise by supporting your joints and helping to prevent injuries. Muscle also burns more energy when a person's at rest than fat does, so building your muscles will help you burn more calories and maintain a healthy weight.

Different types of exercise strengthen different muscle groups, for example:

*For arms, try rowing or cross-country skiing. Pull-ups and push-ups, those old gym class standbys, are also good for building arm muscles.

*For strong legs, try running, biking, rowing, or skating. Squats and leg raises also work the legs.

*For shapely abs, you can't beat rowing, yoga or pilates, and crunches.

Flexibility Training
Strengthening the heart and other muscles isn't the only important goal of exercise. Exercise also helps the body stay flexible, meaning that your muscles and joints stretch and bend easily. People who are flexible can worry less about strained muscles and sprains.

Being flexible may also help improve a person's sports performance. Some activities, like dance or martial arts, obviously require great flexibility, but increased flexibility can also help people perform better at other sports, such as soccer or lacrosse.

Sports and activities that encourage flexibility are easy to find. Many high schools have gymnastics programs. Martial arts like karate also help a person stay flexible. Ballet, pilates, and yoga are other good choices. Warming up for a workout and doing simple stretching exercises before and after your workout also help you develop flexibility.

What's Right for Me?
One of the biggest reasons people drop an exercise program is lack of interest: If what you're doing isn't fun, it's hard to keep it up. The good news is that there are tons of different sports and activities that you can try out to see which one inspires you.

When picking the right type of exercise, it can help to consider your workout personality. For example, do you like to work out alone and on your own schedule? If so, solo sports like biking or snowboarding may be for you. Or do you like the shared motivation and companionship that comes from being part of a team?

You also need to plan around practical considerations, such as whether your chosen activity is affordable and available to you. (Activities like horseback riding may be harder for people who live in cities, for example.) You'll also want to think about how much time you can set aside for your sport.

It's a good idea to talk to someone who understands the exercise, like a coach or fitness expert at a gym. He or she can get you started on a program that's right for you and your level of fitness.

Another thing to consider is whether any health conditions may affect how — and how much — you exercise. Doctors know that most people benefit from regular exercise, even those with disabilities or conditions like asthma. But if you have a health problem or other considerations (like being overweight or very out of shape), talk to your doctor before beginning an exercise plan. That way you can get information on what exercise programs are best and what to avoid.

Too Much of a Good Thing
As with all good things, it's possible to overdo exercise. Although exercising is a great way to maintain a healthy weight, exercising too much to lose weight isn't healthy. The body needs enough calories to function properly. This is especially true for teens, who are still growing.

Exercising too much in an effort to burn calories and lose weight (also called compulsive exercise) can be a sign of an eating disorder. If you ever get the feeling that your exercise is in charge of you rather than the other way around, talk with your doctor, a parent, or another adult you trust.

It's also possible to overtrain — something high school athletes need to watch out for. If you participate in one sport, experts recommend that you limit that activity to a maximum of 5 days a week, with at least 2–3 months off per year. You can still train more than that as long as it's cross-training in a different sport (such as swimming or biking if you play football).

Participating in more than one activity or sport can help athletes use different skills and avoid injury. Also, never exercise through pain. And, if you have an injury, make sure you give yourself enough time to heal. Your body — and your performance — will thank you.

Considering the benefits to the heart, muscles, joints, and mind, it's easy to see why exercise is wise. And the great thing about exercise is that it's never too late to start. Even small things can count as exercise when you're starting out — like taking a short bike ride, walking the dog, or raking leaves.

If you're already getting regular exercise now, try to keep it up after you graduate from high school. Staying fit is often one of the biggest challenges for people as they get busy with college and careers.

garlic

Natural Weight-Loss Food: Garlic

Through the centuries, garlic has been both reviled and revered for its qualities. Today, the gossip about garlic and its apparent disease-preventing potential has reached a fevered pitch. For garlic lovers, that's good news; adding garlic to dishes can punch up the flavor.

When it comes to weight loss, garlic appears to be a miracle food. It contains the compound allicin which has anti-bacterial effects and helps reduce unhealthy fats and cholesterol.

Once you learn to appreciate its pungency, most anything tastes better with garlic. And once you learn its possible health benefits, you may learn to love it.

Health Benefits

The list of health benefits just seems to grow and grow. From preventing heart disease and cancer to fighting off infections, researchers are finding encouraging results with garlic. Behind all the grandiose claims are the compounds that give garlic its biting flavor. The chief health-promoting "ingredients" are allicin and diallyl sulfide, sulfur-containing compounds. Although allicin is destroyed in cooking, other helpful compounds are formed by heat or aren't destroyed by it. This lets cooked garlic give you a health boost. Garlic also contains the powerful antioxidants C and E, and the mineral selenium.

Garlic has been found to lower levels of LDL cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol, and raise HDL cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol in the short term. Its effects last about three months when taken daily. It may also help to dissolve clots that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Even when cooked, garlic helps keep cholesterol in your bloodstream from oxidizing and damaging the lining of your blood vessels, which helps prevent the formation of plaque.

Garlic has also been found to inhibit the growth of, or even kill, several kinds of bacteria, including Staphylococcus and Salmonella, as well as many fungi and yeast. Animal studies have found that garlic helps prevent colon, lung, and esophageal cancers. How much is enough? Researchers suggest you can enjoy the benefits of garlic every day by eating a typical clove weighing 3 grams.

Selection and Storage

Most varieties of garlic have the same characteristic pungent odor and bite. Pink-skinned garlic tastes a little sweeter and keeps longer than white garlic. Elephant garlic, a large-clove variety, is milder in flavor than regular garlic and should be used like a leek. But most varieties can be used interchangeably in recipes.

Choose loose garlic if you can find it. It's easier to check the quality of what you're getting than with those hiding behind cellophane. Its appearance can clue you in to its freshness; paper-white skins are your best bet. Then pick up the garlic; choose a head that is firm to the touch with no visible damp or brown spots.

Don't expect the flavor of garlic powder to mimic fresh garlic. Much of the flavor is processed out. Garlic powder, however, may retain some active components. Garlic salt, of course, contains large amounts of sodium -- as much as 900 milligrams per teaspoon, so avoid using it.

Store garlic in a cool, dark, dry spot. If you don't use it regularly, check it occasionally to be sure it's usable. Garlic may last only a few weeks or a few months. If one or two cloves have gone bad, remove them, but don't nick remaining cloves; any skin punctures will hasten the demise of what's left. If garlic begins to sprout, it's still okay to use, but it may have a milder flavor, just remove the tough, green sprout.

5 Foods for a Better Mood

1) Oatmeal

Oatmeal may help if you find yourself feeling irritable and cranky. It is rich in soluble fiber, which helps to smooth out blood sugar levels by slowing the absorption of sugar into the blood.

Oatmeal is also a great food to help you stick with your diet plan, because the soluble fiber in oatmeal forms a gel that slows the emptying of your stomach so you don't feel hungry quickly.

Other foods high in soluble fiber are: beans, peas, barley, citrus fruits, strawberries and apples.

What to try:

Add tasty toppings to oatmeal, such as:

  • Low-fat granola and skim milk
  • Coarsely chopped apple or unsweetened chunky applesauce with cinnamon
  • Strawberries and sliced almonds

2) Walnuts

Walnuts have long been thought of as a "brain food" because of their wrinkled, bi-lobed (brainlike) appearance. But now we know that walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, a type of fat that's needed for brain cells and mood-lifting neurotransmitters to function properly and possible help some people with depression.

Other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, sardines, flaxseeds, and omega-3 fortified eggs.

What to try:

  • Instead of reaching for a muffin as a snack, try walnuts and an apple. The fiber and good fat will also curb your appetite for longer.
  • Try mixing crushed walnuts into yogurt as a snack.
  • Sprinkle walnuts over salads.

3) Tea

Although caffeine has been shown to lead to a more positive mood and improved performance, it's a fine line.

Too much caffeine can make you dependent and make you nervous, irritable, hypersensitive or bring on headaches.

What to try:

  • A good strategy is to limit yourself to no more than one 8 oz. cup of coffee a day. Instead of that second cup, try making a cup of green tea. You can find it in teabag form in most grocery stores.
  • Another option: chai. It's an Indian tea made with regular black tea plus spices such as cardamom and cinnamon. The spices also add a natural sweetness to the tea, which may help you cut back on sugar and sweeteners.
  • If you're in the mood to try a new herbal tea, consider rooibos. Rooibos is a reddish brown tea that tastes more like regular black tea than other herbal teas.

Like chai, rooibos also has a hint of natural sweetness, which makes it a good option for people trying to lose weight.

Try hot rooibos tea plain, with a wedge of lemon, or with milk. It also makes a great iced tea.

Rooibos can be found in health food stores, some grocery stores, online, and increasingly, in cafes and restaurants that serve herbal tea.

4) Salmon

In the past few years, research has suggested that vitamin D may increase the levels of serotonin, one of the key neurotransmitters influencing our mood, and that it may help to relieve mood disorders.

We get vitamin D mainly through exposure to sunlight and in lesser amounts, through food.

But a recent study found that in Boston, exposure to sunlight during the months of November through February does not produce any significant amounts of vitamin D in skin.

What to try:

  • Canned salmon with bones is rich in vitamin D. It is also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Instead of tuna for your sandwiches, opt for canned Alaskan pink or sockeye salmon with bones. Choose water-packed salmon, which is lower in calories than the oil-packed.
  • Other foods high in vitamin D are fortified milk and fortified soy milk.

5) Lentils

A member of the legume family, lentils are an excellent source of folate, a B vitamin that appears to be essential for mood and proper nerve function in the brain.

Low levels of folate have been linked to depression. In fact, a Harvard study showed that 38 percent of depressed women are deficient in folate.

Although researchers don't yet fully understand the connection, folate deficiency appears to impair the metabolism of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, neurotransmitters important for mood.

A cup of cooked lentils provides 90% of the recommended daily allowance of folic acid. A healthy bonus: lentils contain protein and fiber, which are filling and help to stabilize blood sugar.

Other sources of folate include: fortified breakfast cereals, green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, liver, and beans.

What to try:

  • Toss cooked lentils with cherry tomatoes, sliced bell peppers, and carrots for an easy salad.
  • Try making lentil soup.
  • If beans make you gassy, use Beano.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

Eyes Are the most complex organs you possess except for your brain.

Eyes Are composed of more than two million working parts.

Eyes Can process 36,000 bits of information every hour.

Eyes Under the right conditions, can discern the light of a candle at a distance of 14 miles.

Eyes Contribute towards 85% of your total knowledge.

Eyes Utilize 65% of all the pathways to the brain.

Eyes Can instantaneously set in motion hundreds of muscles and organs in your body.

Eyes In a normal life-span, will bring you almost 24 million images of the world around you.

Eyes The external muscles that move the eyes are the strongest muscles in the human body for the job that they have to do. They are 100 times more powerful than they need to be.

Eyes The adult eyeball measures about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. Of its total surface area only one-sixth is exposed -- the front portion.

Eyes The eye is the only part of the human body that can function at 100% ability at any moment, day or night, without rest. Your eyelids need rest, the external muscles of your eyes need rest, the lubrication of your eyes requires replenishment, but your eyes themselves "never" need rest. But please rest them!

Eyes Eyes are your most precious sense... care for them properly!

Lifestyle habit affects obesity

Obese means having much of body fat that the health is at risk. Too much body fat can lead to heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and arthritis.

A measurement called a body mass index, or BMI, decides whether a person’s weight is suffering from obesity. To calculate the BMI - is combination of weight and height. If, a BMI of 30 or higher, it is considered to be extra weight.

Risk Factors and Causes

Many factors can contribute to obesity and overweight, such as, lifestyle choices (e.g., lack of exercise), medical conditions (e.g., hypothyroidism), and genetics (i.e., heredity). When a person takes in more calories than he or she uses, overweight and obesity result. These excess calories are stored in the body as fat, and unless weight-control strategies are put into place, more and more weight is gained.

Most of the people gain weight when they eat high - calories food and don’t exercise enough, but there are some other factors which includes weight gain too:

·         Lifestyle habits often affect calorie consumption and exercise. - Lifestyle choices, medical conditions, and genetics contribute to obesity

·         Certain social factors also may be linked to obesity.

·         Alcohol adds calories to the diet, increases appetite.

·         Psychological/emotional issues (Stress and boredom may lead people to eat more and exercise less.)

Obesity and overweight can be genetic (i.e., run in families). Genes have some control over the quantity and location of stored body fat. Therefore, obese parents are more likely to have obese or overweight children.

Weight gain usually happens over time. Most people know when they have gained weight. Some of the signs of overweight or obesity include:

·         Clothes feeling tight and needing a larger size.

·         The scale showing that you have gained weight.

·         Having extra fat around the waist.

SANITARY NAPKINS/PADS

Do not use pad for more than 3 hours can cause cervical cancer & bacteria infection.

FOR THOSE OF US WHO USE SANITARY NAPKINS/PADS:

IF u ever wondered what were the ingredients that made popular brands so
'free! and light and carefree', well here's the bit:

The material that makes the pad so paper THIN, is cellulose gel. YEap,
it's not even cotton!!!!!!

DO NOT wear the same pad for more than 3 hours of a maximum!!! After
this duration, the genital area is prone to bacterial action and may
result in cervical cancer or other complications!!!!!!!!!!

REMEMBER! NEVER
NEVER NEVER WEAR THE SAME PAD FOR MORE THAN 3 HOURS!!!!

SO yes, please pass on this message to as many women as possible and
save lives!!!!!!!!!!

If you are a woman and use pads, but especially if you use tampons, read
this and pass it on to your friends. For the men receiving this email,
please forward it to your friends, significant others,  wife, sisters, mothers,
daughters, etc. Thanks!

Check the labels of the sanitary pads or tampons that you are going to
buy the next time and see whether you spot any of the familiar signs
stated in this email.

No wonder so many women in the world suffer from cervical cancer and
womb tumors. Have you heard that tampon makers include asbestos in
tampons? Why would they do this?

Because asbestos makes you bleed more, if you bleed more, you're going
to need to use more. Why isn't this against the law since asbestos is so
dangerous? Because the powers that be, in all their wisdom (not), did
not consider tampons as being ingested, and, therefore, didn't consider
them illegal or dangerous.
This month's Essence magazine has small article about this and they
mention two manufacturers of a cotton tampon alternative. The companies
are: Organic Essentials @1-800) 765-6491 and Terra Femme @(800)755-0212.

A woman getting her Ph.D. at University of Colorado at Boulder sent the
following: 'I am writing this because women are not being informed about
the dangers of something most of us use: tampons. I am taking a class
this month and I have been learning a lot about biology and women,
including much about feminine hygiene. Recently we have learned that
tampons are actually dangerous (for other reasons than TSS). I'll tell
you this - after learning about this in our class, most of the females
wound up feeling angry and upset with the tampon industry, and I for
one, am going to do something about it To start, I want to inform
everyone I can, and email is the fastest way that I know how

HERE ! IS THE SCOOP:
Tampons contain two things that are potentially harmf ul: Rayon (for
absorbency), and dioxin (a chemical used in bleaching the products). The
tampon industry is convinced that we, as women, need bleached white
products in order to view the product as pure and clean. The problem
here is that the dioxin, which is produced in this bleaching process,
can lead to very harmful problems for a woman. Dioxin is potentially
carcinogenic cancer-associated)and is toxic to the immune and
reproductive systems. It has also been linked to endometriosis and lower
sperm counts for men. For both sexes, it breaks down the immune system.

Last September, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that
there really is no set 'acceptable' level of exposure to dioxin given
that it is cumulative and slow to disintegrate. The real danger comes
from repeated contact Karen Couppert 'Pulling the Plug on the Tampon
Industry'). I'd say using about 4-5 tampons a day, five days a month,
for 38 menstruating years is 'repeated contact', wouldn't y! ou? Rayon
contributes to the danger of tampons and dioxin because it is a highly
absorbent substance. Therefore, when fibers from the tampons are left
behind in the vagina (as usually occurs), it creates a breeding ground
for the dioxin. It also stays in a lot longer than it would with just
cotton tampons. This is also the reason why TSS (toxic shock syndrome)
occurs.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?

Using feminine hygiene products that aren't bleached and that are all
cotton. Other feminine hygiene products
(pads/napkins) contain dioxin as well, but they are not nearly as
dangerous since they are not in direct contact with the vagina. The
pads/napkins need to stop being bleached, but, obviously, tampons are
the most dangerous.

So, what can you do if you can't give up using tampons? Use tampons that
are made from 100% cotton, and that are UNBLEACHED. Unfortunately, there
are very few compani! es that make these safe tampons. They are usually
only found in health food stores.

Countries all over the world (Sweden, Germany, British Columbia, etc.)
have demanded a switch to this safer tampon, while the U.S. has decided
to keep us in the dark about it. In 1989, activists in England mounted a
campaign against chlorine bleaching. Six weeks and 50,000 letters later,
the makers of sanitary products switched to oxygen bleaching (one of the
green methods available) (MS magazine, May/June 1995).

WHAT TO DO NOW:
Tell people. Everyone. Inform them. We are being manipulated by this
industry and the government, let's do something about it! Please write
to the companies: Tampax(Tambrands), Playtex, O.B., Kotex. Call the 800
numbers listed on the boxes. Let them know that we demand a safe product
ALL COTTON UNBLEACHED TAMPONS.

AND FOR THOSE OF US WHO USE SANITARY NAPKINS/PADS:

lemon and lime

Natural Weight-Loss Food: Lemons and Limes

Probably the most tart of fruits, lemons and limes are rarely eaten alone. But their tart juice adds life to everything from salads to pies. This gives them carte blanche to fight fat by perking up all the fresh, low-calorie foods in your new weight-loss plan.

Health Benefits

Anyone learning to appreciate the flavors of whole, processed foods should keep a lemon or lime handy. Squeeze on lemon or lime juice, add a few herbs, and you can perk up most any dish. Neither juice adds any appreciable calories, just pizzazz, plus a bit of nutrition, too.

Both lemons and limes exude vitamin C, the antioxidant that helps fight heart disease, inflammation, and cancer. Moreover, lemons and limes contain phytochemicals, such as terpenes and limonenes, that may play a role in preventing some cancers.

Selection and Storage

Look for firm, unblemished fruit that's heavy for its size -- an indicator of juiciness. Thin-skinned fruit yield the most juice. Refrigerated, they keep for a month or two. Lemons will even keep for a week or two at room temperature, but limes must be refrigerated. Lemon varieties vary mostly in their skin thickness, juiciness, and number of seeds. The key lime -- of pie fame -- is more flavorful than other lime varieties because of its greater acidity. Key limes are small and round; other varieties look more like green lemons. Limes typically turn yellowish as they ripen. The greenest limes have the best flavor.

your foot, if you massage these points you will find relief from aches and pains as you can see the heart is on the left foot.

Typically they are shown as points and arrows to show which organ it connects to.

It is indeed correct since the nerves connected to these organs terminate here.

This is covered in great details in Acupressure studies or textbooks.

God created our body so well that he thought of even this. He made us walk so that we will always be pressing these pressure points and thus keeping these organs activated at all times.

So, keep walking...

DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH
It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven a its value. We publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been found successful by a Japanese med ical society as a 100% cure for the following diseases:

Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy, excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine diseases, vomiting, ga str itis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all eye diseases, womb, cancer and men str ual disorders, ear nose and throat diseases.

METHOD OF TREATMENT

1. As you wake up in the morning
before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160ml glasses of water .....interesting

2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minutes

3. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.

4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink anything for 2 hours

5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at the beginning may commence by taking lit tle water and gradually increase it to 4 glasses per day.

6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others can enjoy a healthy life.

The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to cure/control/ reduce main diseases:

1. High Blood Pressure - 30 days

2. Ga str ic - 10 days

3. Diabetes - 30 days

4. Constipation - 10 days

5. Cancer - 180 days

6. TB - 90 days

7. Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwards - daily.

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of treatment you may have to urinate a few times.

It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life.

Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.

This makes sense .. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals ..not cold water. Maybe it
is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that
you have just consumed . It will slow down the digestion.

Once this ' sludge ' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks: Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.

Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.

Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.

60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.

Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let ' s be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to everyone they know, you can be sure that we ' ll save at least one life.

Brain 'trick' Offers Treatment Hope For Alzheimer's

Scientists in the UK and Canada have made a significant step forward in the search for new drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease.

An ageing population means that neurodegeneration, such as Alzheimer’s disease, is one of the major health problems in the developed world. But researchers at the University of York and Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, have designed an enzyme inhibitor which could ‘trick’ the brain and so help to halt neurodegeneration.

One of the causes of neurodegeneration is a modification to the protein ‘tau’, which helps to maintain the stability of neurones in the brain, causing them to form aggregates termed ‘tangles’.

These diseases, or ‘tauopathies’ are believed to be caused by a form of the protein tau which has been excessively modified with phosphate.

By studying the chemistry and structure of relevant enzymes, the research teams at York, led by Professor Gideon Davies, and Simon Fraser, led by Professor David Vocadlo, have designed an enzyme inhibitor that prevents the phosphorylation of tau in animal models. They have effectively tricked the brain’s own enzymes into installing a sugar on to tau in place of the detrimental phosphates.

The enzyme inhibitor, termed a ‘thiazoline’, developed by Professor Vocadlo and Professor Davies is not yet a drug, but it is a major breakthrough in finding compounds that cross the blood-brain barrier to elicit beneficial effects that prevent the onset of tauopathies.

Professor Davies, of the Department of Chemistry at York, said: “We hope that the work will evolve into new drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease, although that is still many years off. The work highlights the synergy of studying the chemistry of enzymes in living cells.”

The research is published in the latest issue of Nature Chemical Biology.

The York /Simon Fraser collaboration also revealed the first structure of the enzyme responsible for the installation of these protective sugars in a paper in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology earlier this month.

MICROWAVE OVEN - Dangerous!!!!!!!!]

Important. Take  care  of  your  health.

(Note - The following link is from Ms. Nenah Sylver and found it of such importance that we are posting it hoping that the author will contact us so we can give full attribution.

"Below is a science fair project that my granddaughter did for 2006. In it she took filtered water and divided it into two parts. The first part she heated to boiling in a pan on the stove, and the second part she heated to boiling in a microwave. Then after cooling she used the water to water two identical plants to see if there would be any difference in the growth between the normal boiled water and the water boiled in a microwave. She was thinking that the structure or energy of the water may be compromised by microwave. As it turned out, even she was amazed at the difference.")

I have known for years that the problem with microwaved anything is not the radiation people used to worry about, It's how it corrupts the DNA in the food so the body can not recognize it. So the body wraps it in fat cells to protect itself from the dead food or it eliminates it fast. Think of all the Mothers heating up milk in these "Safe" appliances. What about the nurse in Canadathat warmed up blood for a transfusion patient and accidentally killed them when the blood went in dead. But the makers say it's safe. But proof is in the pictures of living plants dying.

Ten Reasons to Throw out your Microwave Oven

From the conclusions of the Swiss, Russian and German scientific clinical studies, we can no longer ignore the microwave oven sitting in our kitchens. Based on this research, we will conclude this article with the following:

1). Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term - permanent - brain damage by "shorting out" electrical impulses in the brain [de-polarizing or de-magnetizing the brain tissue].

2). The human body cannot metabolize [break down] the unknown by-products created in microwaved food.

3). Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.

4). The effects of microwaved food by-products are residual [long term, permanent] within the human body.

5). Minerals, vitamins, and nutrients of all microwaved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.

6). The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.

7). Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths [tumors]. This may explain the rapidly increased rate of colon cancer in America .

8). The prolonged eating of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.

9)Continual ingestion of  microwaved food causes immune system deficiencies through  lymph gland and blood serum alterations.

10)Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability and a decrease of intelligence.

Have you tossed out your microwave oven yet? After you throw out your microwave, you can use a toaster oven as a replacement. It works well for most and is nearly as quick. The use of artificial microwave transmissions for subliminal psychological control, a.k.a. "brainwashing",has also been proven. We're attempting to obtaincopies of the 1970's Russian research documents and results written by Drs.Luria and Perov specifying their clinical experiments in this area.

STOMACH ULCERS / H. PYLORI

STOMACH ULCERS / H. PYLORI

Helicobacter pylori commonly referred as H.pylori are a type of bacteria commonly responsible for most of the peptic ulcers and inflammation of the stomach lining. In severe cases this infection can also contribute to stomach and other digestive system cancers.

This bacterium produces toxins which inflame or affect the cells in the stomach lining. H pylori by destroying the stomach lining allow the acids of the stomach to seep in the sensitive lining beneath.

The bacteria along with the acid irritate the sensitive inner lining and cause a sore or an ulcer. Although many people do not exhibit any signs and symptoms till the matter worsens, for other may experience a dull ache or burning pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, bloating, burping, weight loss, changes in appetite, bloody or black tarry stool and bloody vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

H. pylori enter the digestive system through mouth via some infected food or water.

Although stomach acids are very hostile for many bacteria, H. pylori can create a low-acid buffer zone for itself and survive happily in the stomach.

Medically this H pylori treatment included antibiotics which kill the bacteria and other acid lowering treatments. But the infection can be prevented by some H pylori natural cures and taking certain preventive measures like for many other infections.

  1. After using the toilet and before eating food, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with warm clean water and soap.
  2. As the infection can spread through saliva also, avoid sharing the same dining utensils like plates and drinking glass as these can act as a carrier to transmit bacteria to other person.
  3. Avoid consumption of contaminated water and food as this is the most common cause for getting H pylori infection.

When To See A Doctor

See your doctor if you experience:

* Severe pain between your breastbone and navel, especially between meals or early in the morning

* Blood in your stool

* Unexplained nausea

* Vomiting

* Weight loss

* Loss of appetite

Maybe you have an ulcer, and maybe you don't. A doctor can sort it out.

If you have been diagnosed by a stomach or duodenal ulcer due to H pylori bacteria then the following H pylori home remedies will be very helpful.

Avoid the culprits – Most people with ulcers caused due to H pylori infection can not tolerate too spicy and heavy food. If you are one of those then it would be wise to avoid certain spices like chilies, hot peppers, pepper, and fatty meals.

Elimination technique – If you are not sure which food causes the problem then an elimination diet would work best to identify the triggers. This can be done by eliminating the suspected foods for a 2-3 weeks and then slowly reintroducing them one by one to identify the culprit.

Eat well – Never over eat, even if it is your favorite food. Always have small but frequent meals, this will keep the digestive tract active.

Strict no – Say a strict no to alcohol, smoking and stress as these are the main aggravating causes for ulcers.

Alternative Names: Peptic Ulcers, Gastric Ulcers

Some of the home remedies of the stomach ulcers are:

Milk - Milk can help to cure stomach ulcers. You must take at least 2 or three glass of milk daily.

Hog Wood - You may eat 5 gm powder of hog wood daily. This will help to cure peptic ulcer fast.

Fenugreek (Methi) - Fenugreek (Methi) is also is also a good curative for the treatment of stomach ulcer.

Cayenne Pepper - This one is a good spice for the treatment of gastric ulcer. You may take one-eighth teaspoon of cayenne pepper in a glass of water twice daily.

Cabbage and Carrot - Another good remedy is a raw cabbage. To make for eating, take out a juice of it. You can also mix in it it some carrots in your juicer to make it go down easier! Drink half a cup of the juice before each meal and at bed time.

Don't take too many Pain Relievers - Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen - though they may be very popular otherwise, but must be avoided by a patient suffering from peptic ulcers.

Avoid Smoking and Drinking Alcohol - you should avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, as it may interfere in the healing process.

Comfrey - Drink comfrey tea or liquid acidophilus culture often to help heal intestinal and stomach ulcers.

Some other good Herbal Remedies for stomach ulcers may be:

  • Bansalochan.
  • Aloe Vera Juice.
  • Chandan.
  • Goldenseal.
  • Lime.
  • Marsh mellow Root.
  • Vegetable Juice.
  • Almond Milk.
  • Barley Water.
  • Red Raspberry.
  • Sage.
  • White Oak Bark.
  • Propolis Capsules.
  • Licorice Root.
  • Wild Yam.

Coffee prevents multiple sclerosis.

Coffee prevents multiple sclerosis

cid:8357C496BFD5408484BE1F9CD1238FD2@vinayp

Washington:
Mice programmed to develop a multiple sclerosis like condition were protected from its effects by drinking caffeine, according to a study.

Researchers discovered that when the
rodents consumed the equivalent of six to eight cups of coffee a day, they did not develop the condition.

According to Linda Thompson, co-author of the study, the caffeine stopped adenosine (a building block in DNA) from binding to an adenosine receptor in mice.

Adenosine is a common molecule in the human body and plays a vital part in the biochemical processes of sleep, suppression of arousal and energy transfer.

When adenosine could not bind to the receptor, this prevented certain T cells - white blood cells that play a central role in immune responses - from reaching the central nervous system, triggering the disease.

“This is an exciting and unexpected finding, and I think it could be important for the study of multiple sclerosis and other diseases,” said Thompson.

In particular, she said, the research holds potential for lupus,
rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases -- conditions in which the body uses the weapons of its immune system against itself.

“A mouse is not a human being, so we can't be sure caffeine will have the same effect on people prone to develop multiple sclerosis without much more testing,” said Thompson.

The findings of the study have appeared in an early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

All about Calcium Deficiency?

All about Calcium Deficiency?

Calcium is required for the growth and strengthening of bones and teeth. Calcium deficiency is one of the most common problems that begins at childhood and resurfaces during pregnancy or old age.

Causes of Calcium Deficiency

1.

Inadequate intake of calcium rich foods

2.

Defective absorption of nutrients in the stomach and intestine

3.

Other conditions like vitamin D deficiency, liver disease etc.

Symptoms of Calcium Deficiency

1.

Brittle bones

2.

Joint pains

3.

Yellowing of teeth

4.

In extreme cases, rickets (soft bones) in children and osteoporosis (brittle bones) in adults

Remedies

Make these ingredients a part of your diet daily to chase away calcium deficiency.

1.

Dairy products: Dairy products like milk, curds, paneer and buttermilk are the richest source of calcium.

2.

Green leafy vegetables: Green leafy vegetables like spinach (palak), lettuce, celery (ajwain ka patta), fenugreek (methi) etc. are also good sources of calcium and hence should be consumed in abundance. Sai Bhaji a mixture of 3 green leafy vegetables is a very simple way to incorporate them in our diet.

3.

Soyabeans: Soyabeans and its products like soya flour, soya milk, tofu etc. are valuable sources of calcium and protein. A quarter to half cup of soyabeans in any form is beneficial for those with calcium deficiency. A vegetable made with soyabeans in a gravy or chapatis made with soya flour are the most acceptable dishes both children and adults. Soya Mutter ki Subzi and Soya Upma are perfect examples of including soya in our daily meal.

4.

Ragi (nachni): Ragi, a popular Maharashtrian cereal, is another rich source of calcium. A quarter cup of ragi, either whole or in the form of flour consumed daily helps to cure calcium deficiency. Try the calcium rich Nachni Pancakes to boost your calcium intake.

5.

Sesame seeds (til): Consumption of 1 to 2 teaspoons of sesame seeds everyday is an effective way to keep calcium deficiency at bay. Try consuming it in salads or in the form of chikki as in the recipe of Almond Til Chikki.

Foods to be Avoided

Deep fried foods
Refined foods like refined flour, pasta, sugar and polished rice

Pointers for Increasing Calcium Intake

1.

Include at least one source of calcium in every meal.

2.

Have at least 100 to 125 grams of one leafy vegetable everyday, either cooked or uncooked.

3.

Consume 2 to 3 glasses of milk in any form (like curds, paneer etc.) to supplement calcium in your diet. Overweight people can use low calorie milk products.

4.

Restrict your consumption of fat, as excessive fat hinders with the absorption of calcium in our body.

5.

Have a sunbath every morning, as early morning sunlight is good for the production of vitamin D which in turn helps in the synthesis of calcium in our body.

Forgetfulness

24 Handy Ways to a Better Memory

Do you have a hard time remembering names, phone numbers, and important dates? Are you constantly losing your car in parking lots? When you leave for vacation, do you have to turn around 20 miles down the road to make sure you shut off all the appliances? Do you sometimes forget how to spell common words? If you can answer yes to most of these questions, here's some very good news: Forgetfulness is curable!

Er, let's see, where were we? Ah, yes. We checked with a few professional memory experts, and a few whose professions require excellent memories. We even checked with a 13-year-old national spelling bee champion. They told us their secrets for building an iron-clad memory.

"With a few simple devices, it's within most people's power to have a super memory," says memory expert Michael Pressley, Ph.D., professor of human development at the University of Maryland.

What kinds of devices? Glad you asked.

MEDICAL ALERT

Keep These Symptoms in Mind

Most skin lumps are not cancer, and most slips of memory are not Alzheimer's disease. "But people tend to be hard on themselves, particularly so as they get older," says Stanley Berent, Ph.D.

When is your forgetfulness so serious that you should see a professional about it? Dr. Berent suggests the following guidelines:

  • Do you lose contact with reality? It's one thing to forget today's date, another to forget the year. If you lose track of where you are, can't remember if it's evening or morning, or have forgotten the name of your spouse (as opposed to someone you just met), a doctor should be consulted.
  • Are you uncomfortable with yourself? If you're feeling anxious about your recent memory lapses, don't sweat it out—seek a doctor's advice.
  • Are you performing your day-to-day roles efficiently? If forgetfulness is affecting your work, your role as a parent or grandparent, or any of your other life activities, you may need help.

Above all, says Dr. Berent, know that your memory doesn't have to be perfect to be okay. Some forgetfulness is just part of life.

Think of remembering as re-membering. Say you're appearing on a television game show and you're on the verge of winning an all-expense-paid trip around the world. All you need to do is remember the name of the battle in which Napoleon was defeated. You know the answer. It's on the tip of your tongue. How to get it off?

"Try to reinstate as much as possible of what you know surrounding the issue," says Robin West, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Florida. Thus, Napoleon may lead to Josephine, to France, to the Napoleonic Code, to battles, and (eventually) to Waterloo. "The more connections you make, the better your chances of finding the right pathway," says Dr. West.

Are There Any Pills for Forgetfulness?

Scientists have long looked for relationships between nutrients and your brain's ability to learn and remember. They know that a lack of certain nutrients can lead to memory and other cognitive failures, but whether supplemental nutrients can lead to supplemental memory is still a mystery.

Research over the past several years has focused on the following nutrients, all of which seem related to memory: vitamins B1 (thiamine), B6, B12, and C, choline, folate, niacin, calcium, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc, and—above all—lecithin.

Some research from the Institute of Physiology in Sofia, Bulgaria, raises questions and hopes about a new, exotic nutrient. Scientists there, experimenting with mice and ginseng, have determined that something in the root of the Chinese plant improves both learning and memory. At least with mice.

So it appears that the day may come when forgetfulness can be cured by popping a pill every morning. Of course, some of us will inevitably forget to take our pills.

Take a picture. The average American, in the course of a lifetime, spends a full year looking for misplaced objects. Want to save yourself a year of your life? You can. Take a good look at those keys as you place them on the table. "Raise your hands to your eyes, miming a camera, and click the button," suggests Joan Minninger, Ph.D., in her book Total Recall: How to Boost Your Memory Power.

Talk to yourself. Go ahead, don't be shy. Give yourself an aural as well as a visual image to remember. If you leave your car at the end of the parking lot, under the huge oak tree, go ahead and say, "I'm leaving my car at the far end of the parking lot, under the huge oak tree." Say it out loud. "It's another way to reinforce the memory," says Irene B. Colsky, Ed.D., a memory expert and adjunct professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Miami.

Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree. Afraid you'll remember your car is under an oak tree, but you'll forget which oak tree? Use physical reminders—they are "very efficient ways to remember," says Forrest R. Scogin, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Alabama. The "yellow ribbon" on the oak tree could just as well be a rubber band around your wrist (to remind yourself to buy tissues), a wristwatch on the "wrong" arm (to remind yourself of Aunt Bertha's birthday)—or just about anything you can think of.

Make lists. Wherever and whenever possible, jot down on paper what you need to remember. "Our short-term memory has limited capacities—there's only so much space available," says Dr. Scogin. By making lists, you not only are assured of remembering what you wrote down, but it frees your mind for more important things.

Categorize. When pencil and paper are unavailable, you'll have to list things in your head—but don't do so randomly, says Dr. Scogin. If you're on your way to the grocery store and you know you need 20 items, you'll probably never remember all 20 unless they are logically grouped. Think: five vegetables, four paper goods, three fruits, etc.

Chunk. "Chunking" is like categorizing, but you do it with numbers. If, for instance, you had to remember the numbers 2, 0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 1, 4, 1, 4, you'd probably have a rough time of it. Remember                      (202) 456-1414        (the phone number of the White House) is quite a bit easier. Phone numbers come naturally chunked, as do social security numbers (001-00-1000). You are free, of course, to "chunk" not only these but any numbers you like.

Make up a silly story. If you've got several items to remember and you're afraid you never will—no problem. Just make up a tale involving your items, says Dr. Pressley. Say you're on your way to the market and you need pork chops, apricots, milk, and bread. Tell yourself a story in which a pig is drinking milk, in a wheat field, under the shade of an apricot tree.

To remember names, think of faces. Perhaps the most difficult memory task we're faced with is remembering the names of people we've just met, says Dr. Scogin. The trick is to etch in your mind a permanent association between the name and the face. Better yet, find a prominent feature on the face and focus in on that. If Budd Luzinski, that new guy in the office, happens to have a long nose—visualize a tiny man skiing down that long nose. Imagine that little man losing (Luzinski) those skis.

How to Avoid Stage Fright

For most of us, keeping a dozen or so phone numbers, an occasional shopping list, and the starting times of our favorite television shows under our cap is about all we demand of our short-term memory.

But what do you do when you have to remember a sales pitch, a speech, or the lines of a play? Or how to spell at a moment's notice any word in the English language? Professional Shakespearean actor Edward Gero and 13-year-old national spelling bee champion Rageshree Ramachandran of Sacramento, California, have a few tips for remembering words and their spellings.

From Edward Gero:

  • "Before I memorize my lines, they have to make sense to me. I will read Shakespeare's lines to myself, putting them into my own words."
  • "I look for rhythm patterns. 'To be, or not to be'Édum de, dum dum de dum."
  • "I look for any alphabetical keys. For instance, in MacBeth, I had to say the following line: 'But, I have none; the king-becoming graces, as justice, verity, temp'rance, stablenessÉ' It helped me to remember the order by knowing that the first two, justice and verity, are in alphabetical order, and that the second two, temp'rance and stableness, are in reverse alphabetical order."
  • "I try to associate lines with movements, so that in The Merchant of Venice, I say, 'and let my liver rather heat with wine' as I'm reaching for a glass of wine."

From Rageshree Ramachandran:

  • "A lot of spellers just try to memorize a list of words for spelling bees—that doesn't work. It's not just memorizing, it's learning the words. I make a new word part of my everyday vocabulary."
  • "Spelling is mostly logic. If a word is unfamiliar, I'll look for a part of it that I can understand. I can spell elegiacal, for instance, because I know it comes from elegy. (Elegiacal means expressing sorrow.) I can spell mhometer because I know that mho is the reciprocal of ohm, and a mhometer measures ohms (a measure of electricity)."
  • "A lot of memory is visual. It helps me to remember a new word if I write it down several times."
  • "There are often little tricks to help spell a word. Take curliewurly (a little squiggly shape). I had to remember that it was curliewurly, and not curlywurlie. The solution was simple: ie comes before y in the word—just like in the alphabet."

Make name associations. It's always easier to remember names if you have something to associate the name with. If you have to remember the name of someone who has no big nose or mole on the cheek, make up a little story. Picture someone named Bruce Taylor sitting in front of you with a pair of scissors, a measuring tape, and a piece of chalk. Someone named Feinstein, you might picture sitting before you holding a huge stein full of beer. Someone named Pressley? Imagine him reading the Pittsburgh Press or shaking hands with Elvis, says Dr. Pressley.

Look for "markers." Things that happened to you long ago did not happen in isolation from other events, says Dr. Pressley. Say, for instance, you forgot when it was that you worked at the ABC Construction Company. Think of any markers or cues that might help your focus. You may recall that you were dating so-and-so at the time, and that so-and-so and you would often go to the movies, and that one movie you saw together was Jaws. You may then recall (or your local librarian can help you find out) that Jaws appeared in the theaters in 1975.

Outline your thoughts. Many college students become intimately involved with a pink, yellow, or green highlighting marker. But you don't need a highlighter to outline your thoughts. You can do it mentally. "Select what is important and what is not," says Dr. Pressley. You're far less likely to forget what you read, he says.

Read, read, and read. If your problem is forgetting words, it's probably because you don't use them enough, says Frederic Siegenthaler. As a senior interpreter at the United Nations, he must store an enormous vocabulary in his memory and keep it ready to pull out at any moment. In English alone (and Siegenthaler is also fluent in French, German, Russian, and Spanish), there are as many as 200,000 words available, although we typically use fewer than 5,000 on a daily basis. So if you can't seem to find the right word, your vocabulary is likely to be a bit rusty.

Solution? "Do as much reading as you can," says Siegenthaler. "I recommend good fiction, particularly classics of the English language, such as those of Charles Dickens, Jane Austin, or Somerset Maugham.

Test yourself. "People generally aren't very good at knowing how good they are at remembering," says Dr. Pressley. "It's very common that someone may think he remembers something, but he doesn't." You've probably experienced this in the middle of an exam. The way to make sure it doesn't happen again is to give yourself a quiz before the exam, says Dr. Pressley. "A practice test will let you know if you have it down or not."

Keep calm. Stress and anxiety can clearly disrupt memory performance, says Dr. Pressley. "You need your consciousness to encode things. Anxiety eats that up."

If you're a forgetful person, it may be that your mind could use a vacation. Patricia Sze of Berlitz International Language School in New York City claims that her school's success in teaching students foreign languages lies largely in the nonthreatening environment of soothing colors, no grades, and no testing.

Check your medicine cabinet and liquor cabinet. Dozens of things have the potential to contribute to forgetfulness, says Stanley Berent, Ph.D., director of the Neuropsychology Program and an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neurology at the University of Michigan Medical School. At the root of your forgetfulness may be the booze you're drinking or certain drugs you're taking, such as diet pills, blood pressure medication, or antihistamines.

What is obsessive-compulsive disorder?

What is obsessive-compulsive disorder?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an illness that causes people to have unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and to repeat certain behaviors (compulsions) over and over again. We all have habits and routines in our daily lives, such as brushing our teeth before bed. However, for people with OCD, patterns of behavior get in the way of their daily lives.

Most people with OCD know that their obsessions and compulsions make no sense, but they can't ignore or stop them.

What are obsessions?

Obsessions are ideas, images and impulses that run through the person's mind over and over again. A person with OCD doesn't want to have these thoughts and finds them disturbing, but he or she can't control them. Sometimes these thoughts just come once in a while and are only mildly annoying. Other times, a person who has OCD will have obsessive thoughts all the time.

 What are compulsions?

Obsessive thoughts make people who have OCD feel nervous and afraid. They try to get rid of these feelings by performing certain behaviors according to "rules" that they make up for themselves. These behaviors are called compulsions. (Compulsive behaviors are sometimes also called rituals.) For example, a person who has OCD may have obsessive thoughts about germs. Because of these thoughts, the person may wash his or her hands repeatedly after using a public toilet. Performing these behaviors usually only makes the nervous feelings go away for a short time. When the fear and nervousness return, the person who has OCD repeats the routine all over again.

What are some common obsessions?

The following are some common obsessions:

  • Fear of dirt or germs
  • Disgust with bodily waste or fluids
  • Concern with order, symmetry (balance) and exactness
  • Worry that a task has been done poorly, even when the person knows this is not true
  • Fear of thinking evil or sinful thoughts
  • Thinking about certain sounds, images, words or numbers all the time
  • Need for constant reassurance
  • Fear of harming a family member or friend

What are some common compulsions?

The following are some common compulsions:

  • Cleaning and grooming, such as washing hands, showering or brushing teeth over and over again
  • Checking drawers, door locks and appliances to be sure they are shut, locked or turned off
  • Repeating, such as going in and out of a door, sitting down and getting up from a chair, or touching certain objects several times
  • Ordering and arranging items in certain ways
  • Counting over and over to a certain number
  • Saving newspapers, mail or containers when they are no longer needed
  • Seeking constant reassurance and approval

How common is OCD?

For many years, OCD was thought to be rare. Some recent studies show that as many as 3 million Americans ages 18 to 54 may have OCD at any one time. This is about 2.3% of the people in this age group. OCD affects men and women equally.

What causes OCD?

No one has found a single, proven cause for OCD. Some research shows that it may have to do with chemicals in the brain that carry messages from one nerve cell to another. One of these chemicals, called serotonin (say "seer-oh-tone-in"), helps to keep people from repeating the same behaviors over and over again. A person who has OCD may not have enough serotonin. Many people who have OCD can function better when they take medicines that increase the amount of serotonin in their brain.

Are other illnesses associated with OCD?

People who have OCD often have other kinds of anxiety, like phobias (such as fear of spiders or fear of flying) or panic attacks.

People who have OCD also may have depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), an eating disorder or a learning disorder such as dyslexia.

Having one or more of these disorders can make diagnosis and treatment more difficult, so it's important to talk to your doctor about any symptoms you have, even if you're embarrassed.

How is OCD treated?

Several medicines are available to treat OCD. These medicines include: clomipramine (brand name: Anafranil), fluoxetine (brand name: Prozac), sertraline (brand name: Zoloft), paroxetine (brand name: Paxil) and fluvoxamine (brand name: Luvox). These drugs can cause side effects such as dry mouth, nausea and drowsiness. Sometimes they also affect a person's sexual performance. It may be several weeks before you see an improvement in your behavior.

Under the guidance of a trained therapist, behavioral therapy can also be used to treat OCD. In behavioral therapy, people face situations that cause or trigger their obsessions and anxiety. Then they are encouraged not to perform the rituals that usually help control their nervous feelings. For example, a person who is obsessed with germs might be encouraged to use a public toilet without washing his or her hands more than once. To use this method, a person who has OCD must be able to tolerate the high levels of anxiety that can result from the experience.

Are these in your fruit basket yet?

We all know that fruits are good for health. Fruits provide vitamins, minerals and energy. Fruits have to be a part of your daily diet. But do you know what fruits are absolute must-haves in your fruit basket? Experts have listed the following five as the best in terms of health benefits.

Guava: (Amrud in  Hindi. Peru in Marathi): This is the uncrowned king of the fruit basket. We are lucky that being a tropical fruit, guavas are available almost throughout the year in our country. A guava tree is one of the most common fruit tress growing in many a backyard. Even in a concrete jungle like Mumbai, one frequently comes across guava trees. Why is guava the star? Recent reports suggest that guavas are packed with anti-oxidant properties and are abundant in Vitamin C. In fact it is said that it beats other fruits hollow when it comes to Vitamin C.  Guavas are also the richest in fibre and have age and inflammation fighting properties. Not surprising then that this fruit is the top chartbuster here!

Lychee: Lychees are beautiful to look at, and taste great too. But did you know that just three lychees can meet a third of your Vitamin C requirement of the day? 100 gms of fresh lychees gives you 72 mg of Vitamin C. Other good points of lychees include copper, potassium and riboflavin. Avoid lychee juices and stick to the whole fruit.

Papaya: Another one from the wonder fruits stable. Papayas are wonderful for your skin as they help you fight wrinkles. Vitamin C, folate and potassium are present in papayas. Papayas contain papain, a natural digestive aid, which helps to cleanses the digestive track. Other nutrients include Vitamin A, E and carotenoids and lycopene. In comparison to an orange papaya has 13 times more Vitamin C and 50 times more potassium and four times more Vitamin E than oranges and apples. All this at a lower calorie count.

Banana: Easy to afford and easily available, bananas are a universal favourite. Quick to digest, bananas come with a host of vitamins, A, B, C and also calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and zinc. Experts say that the fiber in a banana is good for your heart. People suffering from acidity are often asked to consume bananas, as they are said to protect from stomach ulcers. Raw bananas are also used in Indian cooking and are high in iron content.

Pomegranate: Red wine and green tea are said to be high in anti-oxidants. But did you know that the content of anti-oxidants in pomegranates are almost three times higher! So next time say 'cheers' with pomegranate juice. Also indulging in this juice frequently is extremely beneficial for your heart and it cuts down the risk of artery clogging. Additionally they contain Vitamin B, C, calcium and phosphorous. It also contains a powerful agent that helps fight against prostrate cancer. It is also said to be effective against anaemia, intestinal parasite irritation, piles, asthma, diarrhoea, morning sickness and poor appetite.

Aspartame harms young brains

Learning and memory may be affected if young people have diet drinks containing the artificial sweetener aspartame, according to a US paediatrician who is presenting evidence today by telelink to the Health Committee at 10am. Mothers are also concerned about New Zealand schools which are now stocking artificially sweetened drinks instead of sugar soft drinks.

The Committee is hearing submissions on aspartame as a result of a petition which calls for the removal of all products containing aspartame and other artificial sweeteners from schools, as well as warning labels on products to alert pregnant women and mothers of young children.

"We are presenting this submission on behalf of over 8,000 people from throughout New Zealand, and especially for all those who have become aware that their symptoms of ill health are due to consuming products with aspartame," stated Alison White, Co-convenor of the Safe Food Campaign.

"The artificial sweetener is the most controversial and complained about additive in history. You only have to google it to see that. It is significant that non-industry funded studies have found various adverse health effects from aspartame, whereas industry-funded studies do not find problems. We cannot underestimate the power and sophistication of industry to maintain and expand its profit and market share, regardless of the health consequences of exposure to this substance."

"The manifestations of aspartame disease in young children are myriad," reported Dr Kenneth Stoller, MD. "These may range from severe headaches, unexplained visual loss, to depression, antisocial behaviour and seizures. Aspartame is not just a food additive. The components in it are isolated in a way that does not occur in nature. It is a neurotoxic drug, causing the deterioration of brain cells."

Mother of a school student, Mary Byrne, is concerned that the Hutt Valley school her daughter attends now stocks artificially sweetened drinks. "I think it's a good thing they're getting rid of sugar soft drinks from schools, but I don't think it's good they're replacing them with artificially sweetened drinks," said Ms Byrne. "I'm pleased that a teacher at the school my daughter is attending is going to show a video on aspartame to students. This gives students more information about the dangers of aspartame, so they are motivated to avoid it."

Aspartame is being used in an increasing number of products, an estimated 6000 products worldwide, not just those labelled 'diet' and 'sugar free' but also in chewing gum, sports drinks, dietary supplements and medications. Sometimes the only warning is 'contains phenylalanine'. An estimated one in 15 people consume aspartame around the world.

"We are alarmed that exposure of young people in New Zealand to aspartame is probably increasing," said Ms White. "Young children especially are at risk of developing an allergy to formaldehyde from aspartame products. Parents and doctors need to be alerted to the problem." The submission presented to the Health Committee includes the stories of three people who have become aware that their health problems were caused by aspartame.

The petition requests specifically:

1. Warning labels on all products containing aspartame to increase awareness of symptoms associated with aspartame toxicity, particularly to alert pregnant women and mothers of small children.

2. A public education programme to raise awareness about adverse reactions to aspartame.

3. A programme to raise awareness within the medical profession of the symptoms associated with aspartame toxicity, to prevent incorrect diagnosis of conditions that may be related to aspartame toxicity.

4. Removal of all products containing aspartame and other artificial sweeteners from schools to reduce toxic effects on young people, thus reducing any behavioural and psychological problems that may result from these effects.

Tobacco 'could help treat cancer'

Tobacco 'could help treat cancer'

The tobacco plant - responsible for millions of cancer cases - may actually offer the means to treat one form of the disease, a study suggests.

US scientists used the plant to "grow" key components of a cancer vaccine.

The National Academy of Sciences study suggests they could be used to tackle a form of lymphoma.

UK specialists said while "potentially exciting", more research would be needed to test how well the vaccine actually worked.

It's pretty cool technology - and it's really ironic that you would make a treatment for cancer out of tobacco
Dr Ronald Levy
Stanford University

The ironic new role for tobacco is the work of researchers from Stanford University in California.

They are using the plants as factories for an antibody chemical specific to the cells which cause follicular B-cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

These antibodies are put into a patient newly-diagnosed with the disease, to "prime" the body's immune system to attack any cell carrying them.

If successful, this would mean the body would then recognise and destroy the lymphoma cells.

However, every patient's antibodies are different, and would need to be produced quickly once the diagnosis was made.

The idea is not a new one - attempts have already been made to grow these antibodies inside animal cells, with mixed success.

However, a plant-grown vaccine would be much cheaper and in theory could carry less risk to the patient, as animal cells might hold unknown viruses.

So far, the experimental vaccine has only been tested on a handful of patients to check for any side-effects of using plant-produced antibodies, so its effectiveness at fighting the disease is uncertain.

'Infected' plants

Dr Ronald Levy, who is leading the research, said: "It's pretty cool technology - and it's really ironic that you would make a treatment for cancer out of tobacco. That appealed to me."

The technique is relatively straightforward. Once a patient's cancer cells are isolated in the laboratory, the gene responsible for producing the antibody is extracted and added to the "tobacco mosaic virus".

The plants are then "infected" with the virus, and as it spreads through the cells, the added gene starts the process of producing large quantities of the antibody.

After just a few days a few leaves are taken, ground up, and the antibody extracted from them.

Only a few plants are needed to make enough vaccine for a patient.

Professor Charles Arntzen, from Arizona State University, said that the sheer speed of the production process could convince patients to wait for their own tailored vaccine rather than undergoing other treatment.

A spokesman for Cancer Research UK, said: "While these results could potentially be very exciting, this was a small and early-stage trial and it did not look at whether this vaccination strategy reduced the size of the tumours."

"This is a good foundation for future work, but a larger study will be needed to test the success of this plant-made antibody in fighting non-Hodgkin's lymphoma."

Drug for deadly prostate cancer

Scientists are hailing a new drug to treat aggressive prostate cancer as potentially the most significant advance in the field for 70 years.

Abiraterone could potentially treat up to 80% of patients with a deadly form of the disease resistant to currently available chemotherapy, they say.

The drug works by blocking the hormones which fuel the cancer.

The Institute of Cancer Research hopes a simple pill form will be available in two to three years.

Richard Pflaum talks about his trial of Abiraterone

An advanced clinical trial involving 1,200 patients around the world is currently under way, with more trials likely later this year.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men.

It is estimated that up to 10,000 men a year in the UK are diagnosed with the most aggressive - and almost always lethal - form of prostate cancer.

Typical life expectancy following chemotherapy is no more than 18 months.

It had been assumed that the cancer was driven by sex hormones such as testosterone produced in the testicles.

Current treatments work by stopping the testicles from producing testosterone.

New action

However, experts have now discovered that the cancer can feed on sex hormones from all sources, including supplies of the hormone produced by the tumour itself.

The changes in my life have been dramatic
Simon Bush
Cancer trial patient

Abiraterone works by blocking production of the hormones throughout the body.

The latest study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, is based on just 21 patients with advanced, aggressive prostate cancer treated with the drug - but data has been collected on a total of 250 worldwide.

It found significant tumour shrinkage, and a drop in tell-tale levels of a key protein produced by the cancer called prostate specific antigen in the majority of patients.

Many of the patients have reported a significant improvement in the quality of their lives.

Some were able to stop taking morphine for the relief of pain caused by the spread of the disease to their bones.

Real hope

Lead researcher Dr Johann de Bono said the findings needed to be confirmed in larger trials.

We believe we have made a major step forward in the treatment of end-stage prostate cancer patients
Dr Johann de Bono
Institute of Cancer Research

At this stage, no patient has taken the drug for longer than two-and-a-half years, and so it has not been possible to determine exactly what the effect of the drug on life expectancy will be.

But he said: "We believe we have made a major step forward in the treatment of end-stage prostate cancer patients.

"These men have very aggressive prostate cancer which is exceptionally difficult to treat and almost always proves to be fatal.

"We hope that abiraterone will eventually offer them real hope of an effective way of managing their condition and prolonging their lives."

It is hoped the drug will also aid other cancer patients, including those with breast cancer.

Professor David Webb, an expert in clinical pharmacology at the University of Edinburgh, said: "This agent clearly looks promising, but it is still at the early stages of clinical development.

FROM THE TODAY PROGRAMME

"It will be crucial to look carefully at the balance between its benefits and harms, before drawing firm conclusions about the usefulness of this new drug.

"Important side effects often only emerge with the larger clinical studies that now need to be done."

John Neate, of The Prostate Cancer Charity, said: "This is an exciting development which has been eagerly anticipated."

Listen to Your Gut

Have you ever had a gut feeling that if you went to this one particular party, even though you were tired and grumpy, something good was going to happen to you? Or have you ever just known that if you walked down a certain street, something bad would happen?

This is your intuition guiding you. And your intuition is provided by the Light.

According to Kabbalah, there is a curtain separating the physical world (1% realm) from the spiritual world (99% realm.) This curtain is all that keeps us from total fulfillment.

Intuition is one means of pulling aside the curtain.

Familiarize yourself today with that feeling in your gut, with first thoughts that pop into your mind. Trust your initial instinct. With each step you take towards listening to your intuition, you will draw that curtain open further.

The Amazing Health Benefits of Vitamin D

This once obscure vitamin has been thought to only fortify skeletal structure through the minerals calcium and phosphorous; however, new emerging research shows this vitamin carries many more tasks than just strengthening bones.

Vitamin D and Pre-eclampsia

Pre-eclampsia is a devastating systemic disorder that is characterized by proteinuria (protein in urine), high blood pressure, and edema. This disorder can cause grave health problems for the mother and fetus: pre-eclampsia can cause premature delivery and is the leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death around the globe (causing some 76,000 deaths per year). Pre-eclampsia is, no doubt, a problem that greatly affects mothers and infants. The cause still remains unknown; however, a study carried out by the University of Pittsburgh found that vitamin D deficiency early in gestation is associated with a five-fold increase risk of developing pre-eclampsia.

Vitamin D and Diabetes

Most people in Western societies are familiar with diabetes, particularly that of type II diabetes. Type II diabetes is highly publicized since most diabetes sufferers are afflicted with this particular form of the affliction. However, the smaller subset, those suffering with type I diabetes, have a small advantage over their counter parts. Recent research has demonstrated that those who receive high amounts of vitamin D during childhood have a lower risk of developing type I diabetes later on in life, the greater the amount of vitamin D, the greater the benefit.

Type I diabetes is different than type II in the fact that, it does not arise out of insulin resistance; rather, it comes about because the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas are destroyed by one's own immune system, starting early in childhood. Though more commonly found amongst Europeans and North Americans, it can affect people from all walks of life.

Vitamin D and Cancer

Vitamin D has also been linked to better outcomes in cancer. In breast, colon and prostate cancer, the sun-shine vitamin has been shown to suppress cancer growth and the formation of blood vessels that feed cancer cells. Furthermore, in a breast cancer study, 24 percent in the breast cancer study had adequate levels of the vitamin at the time of diagnosis. Those who were deficient were more likely to have the cancer metastasize or recur ten years later. Moreover, 73 percent of the deficient were more likely to die.

A study in the International Journal of Cancer found that vitamin D protects cells from oxidative stress. This study used the most biologically active form of the vitamin, vitamin D3 along with nonmalignant human prostate epithelial cells. Metabolism of cells produces free radicals that can damage DNA and contribute to cancer formation and accelerated aging. Vitamin D links with a gene that increases its activity and produces an enzyme that combats free radical damage by clearing the cell of those DNA-damaging substances. This relieves cell stress and retains healthy cells.

Vitamin D and Brain Function

Because of the many vitamin D receptors in the brain, it has been discovered that vitamin D plays a very important role in maintaining and achieving a healthy mind. Though more research in this particular area of vitamin D functions is needed, it is worth mentioning since vitamin D has been indicated in children with brain dysfunction (its exact mechanisms are still unclear at present).

Though behavioral and cognitive difficulties and their association to low vitamin D levels is still a little sketchy, what is known is how low vitamin D levels affect depression in the elderly. Accompanied by an overactive parathyroid, low vitamin D levels have been implicated to increase depression in older adults, and in other mental disorders. This information is particularly important because, instead of treating patients with dangerous psychotropic medications that have hazardous side effects, depression could in the future be treated with a higher intake of vitamin D or more calcium and exposure to sunlight.

Supplementation

Now that many of the health benefits of vitamin D have been shown, it is time to describe where to find this vitamin and who needs it the most. The largest source of this vitamin is the sun. Contrary to popular belief, spending time in the sun daily is not deadly. Though there is such a thing as too much of a good thing, never spending any time in the sun is certainly not the better alternative. Lighter individuals need less time than darker individuals, about 15 minutes in the sun daily. For darker individuals, more time is need than 15 minutes (approximately 30 minutes).

Another source is through diet. Raw milk naturally contains vitamin D, but the largest dietary source
would have to be cod liver oil.

As for who needs vitamin D the most, everybody needs it! However, it has been recently shown that young children and infants tend to be deficient, even though they appear healthy otherwise. Currently, the new info on vitamin D and all its varying abilities has prompted many to deem the recommended daily allowance (RDA) to be far too low -- the highest amount suggested being 600 IU. The Vitamin D Council recommends at least 1,000 IU (or 25 ug/day).

To sum up all this info on supplementing this vitamin: if people get plenty of sunshine, raw milk, and cod liver oil, many would surely reap the benefits of this vitamin.

Overall, vitamin D has been for years underestimated in its abilities and its health benefits. The future only holds more data on how important this vitamin is; therefore, supplementation needs to be more emphasized.

What is Light?

What is Light, spiritually speaking?

It's joy. It's unconditional love and compassion. It's that which animates us and fills our body with life.

And you experience it all the time. Any moments in which you feel genuinely happy, when joy floods through you...that's the Light. When you are pleased by a job well done, when you are tingling from falling in love, when you are perfectly relaxed on a boat on the ocean, when you are laughing so hard with friends that you think you're going to explode, when you watch someone you love earn something they deserve. The source of all of this is the Light.

The Light is on 24/7. We only need to step back from our rational, self-serving minds, and let it do its magic.

Allow yourself to feel the Light today. Just let yourself experience the joy, love and compassion that is inside of you. That's it.

A MORNING PRAYER

Dear Lord, I thank you for this day. I thank You for my being able to see and to hear this morning. I'm blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or thought that was not pleasing to you. I ask now for Your forgiveness.

Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so tha t I can hear from You.

Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things.

Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over. Let me continue to see sin through God's eyes and acknowledge it as evil. And when I sin, let me repent, and confess w ith my mouth my wrongdoing, and receive the forgiveness of God.

And when this world closes in on me, let me remember Jesus' example -- to slip away and find a quiet place to pray. It's the best response when I'm pushed beyond my limits. I know that when I can't pray, You listen to my heart. Continue to use me to do Your will.

Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak. Keep me uplifted that I may have words of encouragement for others. I pray for those who are lost and can't find their way. I pray for those who are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for those who don't know You intimately. I pray for those who will delete this without sharing it w ith others. I pray for those who don't believe. But I thank you that I believe.

I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers. For each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace, love and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all their needs are met.

I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight. I pray that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees them and every mouth that confesses them willingly..

This is my prayer.
In God's Name, May God bless you.

God's love is always with you, God's promises are true.

And when you give God all your cares, You know God will see you through.

Freedom of Simplicity

Freedom  of Simplicity
By  Bo Sanchez

Happiness is not found outside  of you. It doesn't come from cars,
clothes, cash, or   Caribbean cruises. Happiness is found  within.
But how can you find it if you  don't have the simplicity of time
and space to  discover the most important things in your life?

How can you search the depths  of your soul if you are too busy
impressing  others, acquiring wealth, protecting your properties, and
paying your debts?

Simplicity is not about the  external either: living in a doghouse,
eating in  Hepatitis joints, wearing rags.

Let me define  what it is: Simplicity is living from the core of your being.

A TREASURE  MAP OF HAPPINESS

Simplicity will point to you  where and what and who the gold is in your life.
Let me  share with you the seven powerful lessons I've learned on simple living:

1. LIVE ON  LESS, AND DELIGHT IN THEM MORE
Some take their  pleasure dining in classy restaurants, trips to Europe ,
and owning the  latest home theatre-equipment. I've chosen the simple path:
If I can simply be with my  wife, or take a quiet stroll under a canopy of stars,
or play with a child, or read  a good book in my home, or laugh with friends
over a  pizza, I consider myself richly blessed.

Focus  on what you have and not on what you don't have.

2. STOP  RUNNING AND WALK INSTEAD
Here's the truth:  The person who has covered the greatest distance does
NOT win, but the one who has  most enjoyed the journey does. Stop
running around  chasing your own tail!

Get off your hurried pace and  learn to breathe. Replace doing with
being. Learn to  say no to invitations, appointments, and commitments,
activities and events that  will rob you of your focus. Learn to say
"yes"  to rest, to tranquility, to quietness.

3. YOU ARE  MORE THAN YOUR WEALTH
I own very few things today.  Because I am more than the brand of my
watch, the logo of  my shoes, the name of my car. I believe that if in my soul
I deeply respect and value  myself, people around me will sense that, and they too,
will value and respect  me-whether I'm wearing Armani or not.

You  are more than your wealth.

4. AVOID  BUYING ON CREDIT
I don't believe in borrowing  from credit cards. (For convenience, I use one card
but I pay the whole amount at  the end of each month.) If I need something really bad,
I save up for it. Sometimes,  at midpoint, I realize I don't really need the darn thing
and give up the whole idea.  The only exception I feel we should enter into a
credit  is when buying a non-depreciating item, such as housing or land.
I believe we should always  live within our earning capacity.
Proverbs 22:7  says, "Those who borrow are slaves of moneylenders."

5. GIVE AS  MUCH AS YOU CAN
If I content myself with 25  shirt instead of  400 Lacoste, I can help others more.
Trust me, there is immense  pleasure! You will find that the empty thrill of owning a
diamond ring on your finger   pales in comparison to the joy of handling a
piece  of bread to an orphan child.

"And God is able  to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times,
having all that you need, you  will abound in every good work." (2 Corinthians 9:8)

The Old Testament of tithing,  or giving 10% of your income is a good guideline to follow.
The New Testament challenges  us to give with a cheerful heart. (When you're cheerful,
you may give more than 10%!)  Make it a habit.

6. SAVE AS  MUCH AS YOU CAN
Saving is essential to being  good stewards of the money that God "lends" to us.
Saving  is an important way of providing for our future-both for our needs and
to be generous to others. I  recommend that you save at least 10% of your income.
I can almost hear you now:  "Bo, that's impossible!" Oh yeah? Well, how did you
live three years back when  your salary was one-half its present amount?"
Sacrifice. Many of our needs  are actually wants. Is cable TV a need? Will you
suddenly die if you can't  watch CNN or HBO? Are those new golf clubs essential
to your existence? Invest in  time deposits, long-term stocks and housing.

7. BUDGET,  BUDGET, BUDGET
Make a list of all your  monthly expenses, according to categories. Make also a list
of irregular expenses-those  that don't come monthly. Set up another savings account
for these expenses and put in  a little money each month. To differentiate this from
the savings account, we call  ours "freedom account" because it frees us from worrying
about them when they suddenly  attack. And stick to your budget!

ONE LAST  WORD BEFORE WE CLOSE
Balance.
Don't take living simply to  the extremes! Living simply doesn't mean living in deprivation.
There are special days when my  wife and I eat in a fancy restaurant. Or, when we splurge into a
vacation. Very rare, yes, but  my point is that you take living simply NOT as a rigid goal-
but as a happy process towards  the goals of generosity, inner peace and holiness.

Beautiful Explanation of Death

~DEATH~
WHAT  A WONDERFUL WAY TO EXPLAIN IT  ...

A sick  man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to

Leave the examination room and said,

'Doctor, I am afraid to die.

Tell me what lies on the other side.'

Very  quietly, the doctor said, 'I don't know.'

'You don't know? You, a Christian man,

Do not  know what is on the other side?'

The  doctor was holding the handle of the door;

On the other side came a  sound of scratching and whining,

And as he opened the door, a dog  sprang into the room

And leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said,

'Did you notice my  dog?

He's never been in this room before.

He didn't know what  was inside.

He knew nothing except that his master was here,

And when the door opened, he sprang in without fear.

I know  little of what is on the other side of death,

But I do know one  thing...

I know my Master is there and that is  enough.'

(sorry - cannot  break this)

May today there be peace within you.

May you trust God  that you are exactly

Where you are  meant to be.

I believe that  friends are quiet angels

Who lift us to our  feet when our wings

Have trouble  remembering how to fly.

CANCER : Not all cancers are the same. 1/3 is curable. 1/3 is preventable.

2 factors of cancer that cannot be controlled are AGE & FAMILY HISTORY.

CAUSES OF CANCER:

1. Smoking is very often the main cause of cancer.

It kills us silently and drains money from us quietly. There're 4,000 harmful

chemicals (though in diluted form) in one stick of cigarette. Taking one puff

is 600 times worse than inhaling exhaust fumes from vehicles.

2. Some foods that cause cancer are :

a. Barbecued Food

b. Deep Fried Food

c. Overheating Meat

d. Food that is high in fat causes our bile to secrete acid that contains a

chemical which is a promoter of cancer cells.

e. Food that contains preservatives, too much salt or nitrates, e.g. canned

food, salted egg & veggies, sausages, etc.

f. Overnight Rice (where Aflatoxin is accumulated)

g. Food that is low in fibre : Our body needs 25gm of both soluble &

insoluble fibre daily. We must drink at least 1.5 litres of plain water a

day.

h. Contaminated Food (e.g. moulded bread causes our body to secrete

toxins that may eventually lead to liver cancer in the long run. Never

eat bread that is kept in room temperature for more than 2 days

especially in a humid weather.)

3. Types of fat and which is the best?

Highly Recommended for Health :

a. Olive Oil - It does not absorb in our body.

b. Fish Oil - Omega 3 (contained in NI's Circulytes) has poly-unsaturated

fat. It's good for our brain cells.

c. Peanut Oil - It contains Vitamin E. A small dosage is recommended

only.

4. Not Recommended for Health

a. Vegetable Fat - Palm oil is worse than coconut oil. It is high in

cholesterol and highly unsaturated.

b. Coconut Oil - It has saturated fat.

5. Specific Food & Beverages

a. Egg when eaten too much can cause High Colon Cancer, Risk Ovary

Cancer, Prostate Cancer.

b. Cabbage is highly recommended for health reason.

c. Tomato is best eaten raw with a bit of olive oil for better absorption.

Other alternative is to take tomato sauce. Do not boil – tomatoes

became acidic when boiled.

d. A little coffee is good because it contains 2 anti- oxidants. Inhale

coffee aroma for half each day is equivalent to eating 2 oranges a day.

However, the residue of over-burned coffee is extremely bad for health.

It can cause cancer.

e. Tea, as long as it is in its original tealeaves and not processed into BOH

or Lipton packets, it is good for health. Tea contains 30 anti-oxidants.

Recommended dosage is a cup a day.

EXERCISE AND BE FIT

Have a balanced lifestyle. Exercise regularly.

F : Frequency : 3 to 5 times a week.

I : Intensity : Exercise till we sweat and breath deeply.

T : Types of exercises : Find one that suits our age, lifestyle…

HAVE REGULAR CHECK-UP once we reach the age of 45 & above, it is

recommended that we go for regular comprehensive health examination. Early

detection may save lives.

Family Love and Medical Greed Can Be a Deadly Combination

For many generations now, we, our families and our doctors have been taught to forget mankind's 6000 year history of preventing and treating illness naturally and to believe that the only real medicine comes in a brown bottle and that the only real healing comes from the medications of big pharma and treatments of mainstream germ theory doctors.

Over the past several decades we have seen how synthetic medicines created in the labs of the trillion dollar world pharma empire cure essentially nothing and merely manage symptoms while their many side effects lead to other conditions and even more medications. Despite the fact that such a system had failed to cure hardly anything in the last half century and lost the so-called war on cancer, we have nevertheless largely bought into the myth of mainstream medicine that has been hammered home by billions of dollars of propaganda, drug company reps and doctored studies -- and we refuse to be shaken from it. After all, "just ask your doctor"!

Those of us who have researched and embraced natural medicine know a far different reality -- the reality that we can see with our own eyes and feel with our own bodies that tells us that clearly nature is by far the best choice, as it always has been, when it comes to preventing and treating illness. We have seen and learned firsthand that in most instances, nature is safer, more effective and far less expensive than anything mainstream medicine has to offer, even though it is largely ignored and suppressed. But we are still a small minority when it comes to the population at large, despite ample proof that nature is best. The mainstream campaign of lies, deceit and suppression of natural competition has been hugely successful. Profits win and healing takes a distant second.

As a result, those of us who know better sometimes are pressured into doubting our own knowledge from well intentioned friends and family who do not know any better and doctors who should know better but whose profits depend upon mainstream drugs and treatments. Far too often, the love of family and friends and the evil greed of mainstream medicine conspire to make a deadly combination. Two situations this past week has brought that point home to me rather vividly -- and in one instance, tragically.

The first one came when I asked a dear friend of mine who is a member of both CureZone and my own Yahoo Health Group (Oleandersoup) to make a post on my Yahoo forum telling about the success his close friend had following my anti-cancer protocol. At last report, the protocol had literally saved his life and he was winning his battle with cancer. To my surprise and sadness, this is the reply I received:

"Tony, I would love to do so, but not appropriate. My friend B___ was eventually persuaded by his family and oncologist to undergo chemo and stopped taking Oleander. All this was without my knowledge. His original diagnosis was colon cancer which spread to his Liver.

"He was not an advocate of Natural Health but trusted my experience in NH to abandon his orthodox treatments and begin Oleander. He died two weeks ago because of the intervention of his family and oncologist.

"(I have lost) my closest and life-long friend. He would still be alive today and free from cancer if he had followed my advice. I am just too angry and upset to do very much at the moment. I don't think a testimonial is now very appropriate."

On the heels of that senseless and heart wrenching tragedy, I called a member of my Yahoo group who has had quite a struggle with IBC (Inflammatory Breast Cancer) -- a very aggressive and hard to treat form of cancer. We had not spoken since before I took a couple of weeks off and I had been having problems reaching her since my return. When we last spoke, she had begun taking the supplements in my protocol again (especially the oleander and Inositol/IP6 -- both of which are very effective at reducing and eliminating tumors) and her hard and swollen breast had finally begun to shrink, which was very good news, since IBC can ultimately lead to a breast literally bursting and the nature of the cancer is such that the skin cannot be joined back together and healed properly. She also reported during our last conversation that she was due to have surgery on her leg due to a broken femur (probably as a result of her cancer metastasizing to her bones).

Finally, I was able to reach her, and when I spoke to her this time, she told me she was at a loss as to what to do and felt trapped by her oncologist and her family. I asked her what had happened since we last spoke and she told me that while she was hospitalized to have a titanium rod inserted in her femur, her mother gathered up all of her supplements and took them to her oncologist, who ordered her to stop taking them and refused to treat her if she did. He also convinced her, along with her family, to undergo chemo so that the breast could be reduced and healed enough to remove it. And, when asked what her prognosis was, he told her that her cancer was a very aggressive one and all he could do was try to buy her a little time to have with her children, friends and family. Not surprisingly, since she stopped taking the supplements, her breast began to swell again.

I was not only dismayed, I was infuriated! I told her, essentially, "Let me get this straight. Your family and doctor made you stop a natural protocol that was working, helped build your body and immune system, and was intended to save your breast as well as save your life so that you lived many more healthy years to a program that will damage your entire body with chemo, cut off your breast and admits that the best he can do is perhaps buy you a few months of poor quality life as you suffer from all the damage the treatment does? And now your breast is swelling again. Absolutely incredible! Your family is literally loving you to death and your doctor is completing the sentence due to his ignorance or downright greed!"

She agreed with me completely, saying that she had studied alternative treatments for over a year and knew better, but she was completely outnumbered by her very mainstream family and no longer even had her supplements. The good news (I hope) is that she has regained her resolve during our conversation and is now going to demand her supplements back and continue to take them, even if she has to sneak them. After a single round of chemo in hopes of shocking her tumor, she plans to rely solely on the natural protocol.

Though those two incidents hit close to home, they really came as no great surprise. The tragic combination of well meaning but brainwashed loved ones and oncologists who limit their treatments to the barbaric methods of trying to cut out, burn out or poison out the symptoms of cancer is a deadly combination I have seen happen far too many times. When it comes to oleander based treatments, a similar tragedy happened with the mother of the man who devised the "oleander soup" home remedy. He used it to successfully rid his mother of liver and lung cancer, but then she stopped taking it and the cancer ultimately returned. Her new and very persuasive oncologist convinced her that her previous victory over cancer was a fluke, some kind of spontaneous remission that surely had nothing to do with some voodoo home remedy. She listened to him, opted for chemo, and soon was dead due to her liver being destroyed by the chemo.

I can understand the actions of friends and family who know no better and mean well. I have a much larger problem with oncologists who likely know better, but stick to what is most profitable -- choosing profits and greed over true healing which is supposed to be their call. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it is hard to ignore the obvious truth. First of all, oncologists cannot help but see the dismal success rates they have in treating most cancers. And secondly, we have this report:

"In 2002, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that in the previous year, the average oncologist had made $253,000 of which 75% was profit on chemotherapy drugs administered in his/her office. Yet, surveys of oncologists by the Los Angeles Times and the McGill Cancer Center in Montreal show that from 75% to 91% of oncologists would refuse chemotherapy as a treatment for themselves or their families. Why? Too toxic and not effective. Yet, 75% of cancer patients are urged to take chemo by their oncologists."

That is pretty damning, no matter how you look at it, for the doctors all too many of us entrust our health and lives to. To restate, 75% of their patients are prescribed chemo, from which they get 75% of their profits and yet 75-91% of them would not opt for chemo themselves! What damnable greed and betrayal of their patient's trust. When friends and family add their pressure to such greed, it can be our very lives that are damned!

The lesson I think we can take from such experiences is this: No matter what, it is your body and your life and neither should be taken so lightly as to hand them over to care you do not believe in merely to please someone else. Follow what you know and feel is right. By doing so, you very well may save your life -- just as your loved ones wanted you to do in the first place.

WHAT IS CHELATION THERAPY AND HOW IT WORKS

Questions and Answers About Chelation Therapy

For more than30 years, people with fatty buildups of plaque in their arteries (atherosclerosis) may have heard about a “miracle cure” called chelation (pronounced “ke-LA'shun”) therapy. But you may not know that the American Heart Association and other medical and scientific groups have spoken out against this treatment.

This answers the most frequently asked questions about chelation therapy. It also gives the American Heart Association’s position on this procedure, as well as those of other highly regarded scientific organizations.

What’s atherosclerosis?

Atherosclerosis is also called “hardening of the arteries.” It occurs when the inner walls of the arteries become lined with deposits of fat, cholesterol and other substances, including calcium. This fatty buildup usually starts early in life and gradually gets worse over many years. That’s why middle-aged and older people are more likely to have the disease.

As plaque builds up, the arteries become hard and constricted. They lose their ability to expand and contract as blood flows through them and they get narrower. These changes make it harder for blood to flow through them, so the heart must work harder to pump blood throughout the body.

If this plaque ruptures or a blood clot blocks a narrowed artery, a heart attack, stroke or other serious medical problem can result. A heart attack happens when an artery bringing blood to the heart mu
